| I know what you mean. I hate when people do that, because I *always*
say "Thanks for calling" and "goodbye".
Ever notice on soap operas the people just hang right up on anyone?
Caller: "Hello, Lilywhite? It's Roxie, just heard that your husband
is cheating on you"
Callee: (30 second stare at husband who is standing across the room
from her) "Oh, I see" Hangs up.
They *always* hang up without any farewell at all. I also love how
they leave people hanging while they stare off into space and absorb
what has been said. The caller never says "hello, hello, is anyone
there?" unless they go so far as to break into a commercial during
the stare and return to the same scene.
Just like real life, huh?

Stacie, I know what you mean about the people on TV just hanging up
without any sort of "goodbye". I used to think that, perhaps,
something was wrong with me, that most "normal" people (great role
models, those TV folks) just got off the phone that way.
Of course, sometimes I go too far with my goodbyes. It can take
me an inordinate amount of time to finally get off the phone.
And saying goodbye to people in person, I'm far worse. It used
to drive my ex-wife crazy. (But then, I always thought she was
too curt to people.) I guess it just depends on one's personality.

| Me, too. You should hear my SO and I on our nightly just-before-we
hit-the-sack call:
Well, I really should let you get to bed...
I guess so. I miss you.
Me too. Sweet dreams, then.
Sweet dreams to you, too. I love you sweetie.
You do?
Yeah!
You're so sweet, you know.
I wish were here.
Me too.
Well, we better go, it's getting late.
Yeah. Sweet dreams again!
All about you, my dear.
(kiss noises) 'night honey.
'night. bye-
Bye.
Love you
love you too
Bye
Bye
This is no exaggeration!

395.5 | Goodbyes Vs Baby Bye-byes! | WBA::GIRARD | | Fri Sep 18 1987 09:19 | 7 |
| How many people say "bye-bye?"
I can't picture myself saying it, especially in a business setting.
Yet I hear it all the time. Is it that people tune off as soon
as they know the conversion has ended. If so, you could say just
about anything at that point.

If you go on taking the rudeness, then they will continue. If you
take time to let his/her AND his/her supervisor know, the person
will not do it to other customers.
My spouse sometimes levels a sales type to tears when they treat
her like a little girl [she's 5'1" and looks like a 21 year old].
Ther was a JC Penny sales lady that accused her of shop-lifting
without talking to her. She was dressed in t-shirt and jeans and
to hear the story is a scream; Judy was accused of stealing a dress;
where is a petite, 5'1" woman going to hide a dress on her?
It turns out, the manager of the store sent us a flower arrangement
for taking the time to help straightening the issue instead of sueing
JC Penny. Me, I'd read the clerk the riot act prior to dragging
in the manager.

| In my old group there was a certain "customer" type person who called often
and never terminated the conversation with a good-bye.. NEVER! The first
time he did it to me I felt sort of embarrased strangly enough, like maybe
I had caused it.. the next time I was a bit ticked, the third time I was
livid!!!! Well I summoned my courage and called him right back one day
after he had 'hung up on me' and simply said "Sorry to bother you, [being
sickly sweet] but I accidently hung up on you thinking you were finished
talking, I am sorry but was there more?" Well who do you think was embarrased
this time? I tell ya, after that although he never said bye-bye or even
good-bye he did learn to say things like "ok, then I get back to him/her",
"see ya" and a few other gems...

395.10 | Hmmm do they call back if it works ? | BETA::EARLY | Bob_the_Hiker | Thu Sep 24 1987 09:24 | 20 |
| Worse than not saying 'good bye'.
Ever get a call from 'someone' with a real urgent problem, needs
help IMMEDIATELY, will affect corporate prpoduct profit line if
'help isn't given RIGHT AWAY'.
After 1 -2 hours of phone time, you leave it:
"Let me know how it works out ?".
Do ALL of them call back - ever ?
I've called a few of them back days, weeks, months later only to hear:
"well ... it seems like its working, but i want to leave it open
in case it happens again ."
This not whining. Its the way it is for certain types of support
calls to the 'field'.
