| Anything by James Taylor puts me right back to early college days...
So does Creedence...but the older I get, those really brainless
songs from the 50's get me nostalgic. Those were the days when
my closet friend was the radio. Songs like "Blue Velvet" get me
misty-eyed. And whenever, WHEREVER I hear the Stones doing
"Honkey-Tonk Woman" I will start dancing. I could be in a meeting,
I don't care ;_)!
Anyone remember "The Name Game" and "Dancin' in the Street" (the
REAL version)? Good grief, I sound like my parents!!

| Sometimes certain 1968 to 1972-ish songs do make me cry . . . cry with
relief and gratitude that I survived those incredibly painful days,
lived to become a competent, happy, productive, adult, and that I never
have to go through those teenage traumas again. Thank God for
adulthood, and no thanks to moldy oldies.

Jeez, I wonder if I should answer, only being a couple years escaped
from college, but...
Stevie Nicks's "If Anyone Falls In Love" I was in a particularly hairy
piece of my college career when that song was big (I had just changed
majors). Every time I hear it, I remember getting into the back of a
big old Cadillac Fleetwood limo one of my friends had after pulling an
all-nighter, and going up to Worcester Airport, and drinking Chambord
while the sun came up.
Okay, so it's odd.

| Musical memories? Tons of them. Funny what effect music can have
on you. Like having to turn off the radio in my car while driving
to work during my divorce.
About the earliest memory is evoked by (I think) 'Trumpeters Delight'.
Takes me back to a warm summer evening in OOB, ME listening to the
Montreal Citadel Band in the pine grove of the SA CampGround.
Anything, slow-danceable, from the late 50s brings back memories
of Jr High dances and certain members of the opposite sex 8-).

But seriously: "Your Song", by Elton John. Takes me back to high

once was enough; I'm never going through that again...

Forgive my ignorance, who's the PMRC?
other songs/groups from "way back" that remind me of the past:
Harry Chapin, Jim Croce, Carole King, off the top of my head. Thanks to the
wonders of multiple buffers: Eagles, Beach Boys, Queen, Simon and Garfunkel,

re: .19
Point of information.
The PMRC is the Parents Music Resource Center, the people that brought
you warning labels on rock records.
That's all I'm going to say about them. Just thinking about them
makes me nauseous.

358.21 | Book/Music Banners Should Be Banned | FDCV03::FULTZ | ED FULTZ | Mon Jul 27 1987 12:33 | 13 |
| What gives the PMRC the right to ban anything? Do they believe
that they are so good as to be able to decipher the meaning of every
piece of music, or whatever? I am always furious when I hear of
a group banning or burning anything such as books, or records, or
free ideas. This country was created to allow the free passing
of ideas, etc. If the persons do not like to listen to the music,
then they don't have to. But for those persons who do, then they
have the right to.
Sorry for going on the soapbox. I got carried away.

358.22 | PMRC doesn't BAN anything; just labels | WEBSTR::RANDALL | I'm no lady | Mon Jul 27 1987 13:17 | 23 |
| I'm not in favor of most of what the PMRC is doing -- I think their
methods are actually going to exacerbate rather than ease the problems
they see -- but I do feel obligated to clarify a couple of
misconceptions here.
The PMRC is not in favor of banning, burning, or otherwise restricting
distribution of any music to adults who are old enough to know what
they're doing. Their concern is with offensive, explicit, or violent
materials falling into the hands, ears, and eyes of children too young
to understand what they're seeing.
They came up with a labelling system in which records that contain
offensive lyrics are marked as containing offensive lyrics. I am not
sure of either the nature of the label or the procedure for deciding
whether a label should be assigned, but I believe the procedure
is voluntary.
The concept behind the labelling is pretty much the same as the concept
behind the rating of movies -- that the person going into a particular
movie or listening to a particular record ought to know what he or she
is getting into.

For the record, I'm against movie ratings, too, but I see Bonnie's
point.
I did not intend to start this note down a PMRC rathole. Such topics
are better suited to SOAPBOX. Besides, I got another one:
"Lucky Man" by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. I hear that one and I'm
eight years old again, making big ship models in my bedroom,
discovering FM radio...

the chorus goes:
And maybe the old songs
will bring back the old times
maybe the old lines
will sound new
Maybe she'll lay here
head on my shoulder
maybe old feelings
will come through
Maybe we'll start to cry
and wonder why
we ever said good-bye......

I'm not in love by 10cc reminds me of sitting on the couch with
my first love denise.
Maneater by hall and oats reminds me of a wild and wonderful weekend
in Vail.
Strawberry letter #23 was the song playing the first time I ever
went to a night club.
All give clear mental pictures and a touch with many of the feelings
i felt at the time. Some are very nice others painful.
Aquarius for instance reminds me of the night my grandfather died.
Mahogany by dianna ross sends me back to graduation from high school.

Groups of us girls walking home from school singing "... going to

Sitting in my room, listening to " ...'twas not so long ago, you

I won't bore you all with any more, but I have had a wonderful

| Come on, there has to be some more of you with some great memories
of old songs......?
"Devil Went Down to Georgia" by the Charlie Daniels Band -
my cousins and I in Franklin Square, N.Y. dancing and singing
all the words as we went down the street.
"High Infidelity" tape by REO Speedwagon - driving to our friends
summer house in Pennsylvania in his '57 Chevy, windows rolled down,
potato chips, Ring Dings and Diet Pepsi's all over the car; stuck
in traffic on the bridge in N.Y. singing at the top of our lungs:
You take it on the run baby,
If thats the way you want it baby,
Then I don't want you around.....
"Fire" by the Pointer Sisters - Walking home from Junior High with
a bunch of girls in "designer" jeans, cowl (sp?) neck sweaters and
clogs, singing and dancing (in a "cool" way of course):
I'm riding in your car,
You turn on the radio
Your pullin' me close
I just so no
I say I don't like it
but you know I'm a liar
Cause when we kiss
Ooh, FIRE!!
Thanks for letting me reminisce........
