One thing I've noticed since I've been at DEC is that most people walk up to a pair of doors and walk thru the one on the left. This happens even if someone is coming thru that door on the other side. Anyone else notice this? Anyone know why?

If I'm carrying something in my right hand, then it's a lot easier to open the left-hand door with my free left hand than to switch hands, or worse to try to open the right-hand door with my left hand. But I haven't noticed this as a general rule here. Steve

Christ, this is one of my pet peeves!!! If people used doors and sidewalks like they do the roads, far fewer accidents would happen!

I've studied this qwerk for years now. I call it the "British rule" and usually mumble something to the effect of "We must be in England!" under my breath to the offender. But seriously, I think there is a valid mechanical reason for this breach of lane. In order to open a door that swings toward you, you must walk up to it, stop, open it, sometimes walk backwards, and then proceed. By just simply using the 'door on the left', you can eliminate the energy wasteful 'stop and retreat' steps from the program. Being nasty, its a form of laziness; being nice, its a form of vigor and hussle. Its just plain eaiser all around, except when caught by someone inconsiderate enought to be using the other lane. BTW- If you think double doors are fun, try milling around the cash registers and condiment bar at the mill at lunch! |
