277.1 | Function Room? | MARCIE::JLAMOTTE | Back to Reality | Tue Apr 14 1987 19:29 | 8 |
| I would be willing to be part of a committee to arrange one at a
club or in a function room. We might be able to get something fairly
reasonably, bring our own munchies and drink their booze.
My apartment is small but we could sure get to know each other because
we would be close. ;-)

| Well, from last time, arranging the party wasn't really hard. The
most time I spent was maintaining the attendance list, plus some
shopping. (I won't have to do much this time - I still have most
of the paper goods left over from the last party.)
I'm not sure if a function hall would fit the bill - I felt a lot
more comfortable in a house with varied places to sit, stand,
talk, and several activities. And last time we only had about 30
people - I don't know if we'd get more this time (maybe yes, maybe
no).
The basic scheme of the last party was that everyone brought food
and beverage - I supplied plates, cups, flatware, etc. (and asked
for contributions towards same). This worked well - though I think
we ended up with a LOT more edibles than were consumed. Also,
liquor didn't seem too popular last time, which makes me leery of
hiring a cash bar.
But if we can't find a suitable volunteer, we may as well go
the function room route. I'd like to see the location be a bit
closer to New Hampshire than last time, say in the Acton to Chelmsford
region.

I was thinking (I do that occasionaly), It'll be June in six weeks.
How about going camping for a night. We could play volleyball on
the beach, have a great cookout and toast marshmellows while getting
to know each other around a campfire.

| I think a camp-out is a bit more ambitious than I had in mind.
Many of us don't have any of the requisite equipment, and it would
be quite expensive. I don't see why we can't do many of the same
things in someone's back yard, for those who are inclined.
Also, an overnight stay would be impossible for those of us with
children who need a sitter.
However, I would resist the temptation to have a terminal going
during the party. The intent is to socialize with the humans
that are present - we can "note" anytime. We didn't have a
terminal at the last party and nobody complained (at least not
to me).
Does anyone perhaps live in an apartment or condo complex that
has a recreation hall we can rent/use? (Mine doesn't.)

convenient (or inconvenient!) to Maynard and Nashua. Mike says
that his house borders a pond, which will provide for swimming
in the daytime, plus it sounds like lots of room for other
activities.
I have in mind the weekends of June 12-13 and June 19-20. If

| The votes are in, and the winner is... Saturday, June 13, at Mike
Foley's place. Being summertime, we'll have room enough for various
activities, so feel free to bring your favorite activity (but nothing
that would get Mike in trouble, please!)
Like last time, I want to keep track of who thinks they will come,
so Mike and I can plan accordingly. So, if you are planning to
come, send me mail (you can do it with SEND/AUTHOR right here)
and tell me:
Your name plus names of guests (if known) or number of guests
Where you live and an indication if you are willing to drive
others to the party or would like a ride (this will undoubtedly
work out better than the separate conference I tried before).
By sending me mail, you are not making a commitment, but please
understand that if we get too many no-shows, Mike and I will
be very disappointed, so let me know ASAP if your plans change.
Likewise, if we get too many walk-ins, we may not have enough
supplies to go around.
This will be a BYOF-and-B (Bring Your Own Food-and-Beverage) affair.
I expect we'll have a grill set up for grillable stuff, ice chests,
etc. An variety of main courses, salads, munchies, desserts, etc.
is always appreciated. I'll make up my [in]famous chocolate mousse.
Please mark your containers, etc. plainly with your name so that
you don't lose anything. Disposable containers are always a good
idea.
If you have portable chairs or tables, please bring them along.
I'll supply plates, forks, cups, napkins, etc. (still have a bunch
from last time!)
Please don't reply to this note with acknowledgements - send me
mail. I will periodically post the latest attendance list here.
But if you have questions, you can ask them here or send me mail.
I am not going to set a limit on attendance this time, but I do
ask that everyone respond no later than Friday, June 5. However,
the sooner you reply, the better I can plan. Also, your name in
the attendance list may spark someone else's interest in attending!
(I can think of a few cases offhand!)
Directions to Mike's will be provided by mail to "registered" attendees
one week before the event.
And a final note. I have added the keyword PARTY to this note,
so you can find it easily by using the NOTES command:
DIR/KEY=PARTY
This is going to be FUN!

277.47 | What a great time! | QUARK::LIONEL | We all live in a yellow subroutine | Sun Jun 14 1987 00:13 | 69 |
| Well, the third HUMAN_RELATIONS party is history, and what GREAT
history it will be. We had at least 38 noters and guests, and
everybody seemed to have a great time. The thunderstorm held off
just long enough for us to cook our dinners, and before that the
weather was nice enough that some people went for a dip in the pond
behind Mike's place.
It was a delightful experience to meet so many noters whom I had
only known by node and username before, and we had many interesting
and thought-provoking discussions on relationships and other topics.
Thankfully, work-related talk was sparse. Later in the evening
there was impromptu dancing inside.
I couldn't help but get the feeling that the H_R noters are caring
and sensitive people, and this reaction was echoed by others there.
Many of us shared our experiences and found that we had a lot in
common with our fellow noters. I wouldn't be surprised to learn
that some new close friendships were created this evening.
Extra special super-wow thanks go to Mike Foley, who actually INVITED
some 40-odd people to tramp mud into his house! (Gee, Mike, can
we do this at your place again?)
My only regret is that some noters could not attend. We missed
you, and hope to see you next time. I've attached a list of the
names I got of noters and guests, but I know I missed the names
of at least a few guests. (I hope I didn't miss any noters!)
Thank you ALL - it was great!

Attending the party was another "first" for me. I have never attended

| Re: .53
Let's not forget the Mercedes that suffered similar damage! What
a wild party! I hope the insurance covers everything!
I think what was perhaps the wierdest thing for me was the conversation
I had with Lee Tatistcheff. She was going around introducing herself
and explaining what her name "looks like" (in contrast to how it
is pronounced). The exchange went something like this:
Me: Well, I knew how to pronounce your name because there was
a math teacher at my high school with that name.
Lee: Oh, that was my dad!
And so it was. Yes, folks, I met Lee some umpteen years ago at
the prep school I attended. She was all of nine then, and neither
of us really remembers, but she would have been at the dinner table
with her father, and I would have been there too at times, so I
must have seen her then. Small world! Of course, since then Lee
has certainly grown up! (And so have I, I think.) Isn't the
perspective of time wonderful! (Makes me feel old....)
I also have to mention the delicious food brought by many people.
I hope I don't insult some by not mentioning their contributions,
but Lenny Bucuvalas's spanakopita (sp? it's Greek spinach pastry
pie) was delightful, and so were Wendy Libby's brownies. I don't
know who brought the pasta salad, but it was yummy too.
Watching the storm come in over the pond was an experience not
to be missed...

40's? Silk suits? Mercedes??? That's a BIG difference from 25,
jeans, and a truck!!

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was great meeting all the folks there (or
at least as many as I got to talk to, I lost track after a while - must
have had too many Coca-Colas and gone on a caffeine high :-)
Minor high spots were the appearance of the attack pooch, and the
spectacular storm. Less memorable high spot was the case of the exploding
Mercedes rear window (Static electric dielectric stress in the laminates?)
I'd have entered this yesterday but I spent five hours in the emergency
room at Nashua Memorial hospital having my insect bites treated !
(despite which I'd go again - only next time perhaps a bee keepers net
suit and gloves would be a better idea than a rain suit).

Lenny - YOU looked like your "picture" of me! I wouldn't tan if
you sprayed brown paint on me!

It sure sounds like you all had a great time! Wish I could have
been there too! Unfortunatley I'm a thousand or 2 miles away from
you. Maybe when I come back for a visit...............
Anyway, someone mentioned that someone brought spanakopita!?
Is that anything like skitchata? If so I sure would like the
recipe! Even if its not the same, I'd like the recipe anyway!
PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy partying!

| Darn it, now I deeply regret my absence. An afternoon appointment
an an evening with Gordon Lightfoot made it impossible to attend.
Sounds *great* tho'. Maybe the next time around, I'll make the
trip from the boonies of western Mass. Happy for y'all, Dana.
