276.0. "Subliminal reprogramming?" by OWL::LANGILL () Mon Apr 13 1987 16:07

Over the weekend my husband and I watched a show on cable and I'm
interested in comparing thoughts on this. This was what I call
a "Sales Show", in other words the guy doing the show was out to
sell a series of tapes that he had created. Aside from that aspect:

His premise is that: from the time we are born we are told certain
things about ourselves, both negative and positive. Those of us
who are sucessful in our lives either financially or personally
are so because we were told many more positives than negatives.
I think that we all agree on that fact - if you don't have a good
self esteem and believe that you will, then you can't.

Now his tapes work on the idea of subliminal relearning - in other
words - reversing the "damage" done by reprogramming on the subconsious
level. The tapes (cassettes) appear to the concious mind just
pleasant, soothing music, but within each one are thousands of hidden
messages. According to him the subconsious mind is unable to
differentiate between reality and fantasy and accepts both as being
real. Therefore the subconcious can be reprogrammed without us
being intellectually aware of what is going on.

Subliminal programming was experimented with years ago in the media
and the FCC has forbidden it's use on public media because of the
powerful impact that it has proven to have. It was then used primarily
used for the purpose of sales (One such situation was in movie
theaters, where frames of the movie film itself were replaced with
messages that told the patrons to go to the refreshement stands
and makes purchases. The message was unseen by the eye on the concious
level, but it got through to the subconcious level. Therefore sales
    soared.)

One study in this type of relearning process that he talked about
was done at a university. A group of basketball players were divided
into three groups. Group a was told to practice foul shots for
one hour each day for 30 days, Group B was told to stay away from
the basketball court, and Group C was told to ONLY think (by
visualization) about shooting foul shots. The results that came
back were that Group B did not increase their ability, Group A
increased their ability by 24% and Group C increased their ability
    by 23%.

    What's your opinion?

There's several people who are trying to sell tapes like this.
But from what I recall, subliminal messages only worked if the
message was very simple, and they didn't work all that well in
    the first place.

You can get tapes like this cheaply from places such as Publishers
Central Bureau. I certainly wouldn't spend a lot of money on it.

276.2Work On The Causes, Not SymptomsTSG::MCGOVERNTue Apr 14 1987 11:5111
While I believe in the power of subliminal messages and the
subconscious, I also believe that if you really want to change deep
personality traits such as self-esteem, you need to do more than
make superficial efforts to do so. If you just paper over cracks
by subverting the subconscious, then you never deal with the root
issues that caused a lack of self esteem. You gotta dig into your
psyche and struggle to feel the reality of how you are put together,
then work to change it. I believe short cuts don't work in the
    long run.

.2 is right - you cant take the "easy way" outta this one.

.0 is right - the Subc cannot distinguish fantasy from reality.

So, you can fantasize that you are *anyway* you want to be,
and if you do it long enough, you'll become it.

You'll begin to believe that that's you - deep down where it
    counts.

You gotta practice though - you cant just sleep all night with
    some tape playin'...

The example given about the basketball player works!

276.5I'm a New Age Thinker?SEDJAR::THIBAULTIt's in the bit bucket...Tue Apr 14 1987 15:287
This all sounds like the "New Age Thinking" course (especially the bit
about the basketball players) put together by Lou Tice and company. It
was very interesting I suppose but I wouldn't pay money to go. I still
have the tapes they gave us, but can't remember what's on them. As far
as I know, DEC still teaches the course.

Thanks, Ray! After hearing everyone rave about the
course, I thought there was something wrong with me
for not enjoying it. I thought he acted and sounded
like a very professional con man. It's been several
years so don't remember the details, but he made a
comment very early in the program, that those who deny
what he's saying are negative thinkers. Sort of a
catch22 situation...if you don't buy the package, you
are wrong because you are not buying the package...

Personally, I much preferred the parenting class that
I took thru DEC: Helicopters, Drill Sargents and Consul-
tants. I found that I could apply the concept to just
about everyone in my life, not just my 7 year old.

I just got a Publishers Central Bureau catalog - it lists about
twenty of these tapes at $8 each, two for $14. Probably cheaper
    than this course.

It's interesting to hear you opinions..........I do not know the
name of the guy.......but if the show is on again I will note it.....
the name of the tapes to be sent for is "Mind Power", what else?.....
the cost.....$299.00 for 36 tapes (actually 40 as he throws in 4
    "free" extra ones.

The thoughts about the sibliminal messages through paper media are
also interesting. I read an article several years ago in some national
    magazine about this.
