256.0. "In the Middle!" by ZEPPO::MAHLER (Come here often? What's your node?) Wed Mar 25 1987 13:35

    Are you a middle child?

If you are and might be interested in forming a
discussion group to discuss the various implications
and neurosis of being raised 'in the middle' then
    please contact me.

    Regards,

	    Michael

I'm a middle middle child (two older and two younger). I always
thought that being in the middle was the safest and best place
    to be :-)

Me, too. I'm right smack in da middle - older sister, younger brother.

I'm also a middle child. Have an older brother and younger brother.
This made me the only girl, big brothers little sister, and little
brothers big sister. Had a great time growing up, there was no
sibling rivalry or jealousy of any kind. Of course being the only
girl, I was kinda spoiled... ;-)

I'm one of two middles (all sisters). I'm third born. Two older
sisters married, two kids each. Younger sister in college, rebel
of the four (but not spoiled). Me, serious relationship, dealing
with possibility of marriage, not rushing, just having a good time.
Older sisters tied the knot real fast. I feel they missed out
on some singlehood. I'm not missing mine..... Younger sister fears
AIDS and is scared s**tless about relationships involving intimacies.
Can't say I blame her 'cause you just don't know.

Hey, Michael, is this the stuff you want to hear or am I way off.
BTW, why haven't you written me?

    Uh oh.
Ummm... I was on a deserted island? No, wait, I was
lost in the Mill, yeah, that's it, yeah, lost, that's
the ticket. I, uh um, I , uh, couldn't find my way
out, yeah, I was lost, hungry, yeah, that's it.

Yup Iam one of those "middle syndrome kids" . Have an older brother
and a younger sister. It had its tendencies to be a bear a lot of
times. The old gag of "well we know what mistakes we made with your
brother, so now we wont make them with you." And of course the real
goody of "but shes the youngest and a girl."

I can still remember a very interesting study published in Psychology
today magizine that the service found that the middle child from the
older brother younger sister family made the best fighter pilots.
The bottom line reasoning was that they, as a child, constantly had to
live up to many things that were not imposed on the other two. This
gave then the tendency to be more aggressive and more willing to take
    chances then their contemperys.

The baby bears the responsibility of fulfilling mom's emotional
expectations and the oldest bears the responsibility of fulfilling
mom's ambitions. Sometimes the freedom of being ignored can be
    a true blessing. :-)
(ouch,...here come the flames....where's the bunker)
256.9WHAT IS THE MIDDLE?OURVAX::JEFFRIESMon Mar 30 1987 15:256
I am the fourth of five, does that put me in the middle? I am also
the oldest girl, so now how do I qualify? I think the middle syndrome
only counts if there are three. I can't think of any special advantages
or disadvantages to arriving in the family when I did. My sister
is eight years younger than I, so for eight years I was the youngest.
I think I got the best of both worlds.

Does an only get to be middle also, since they are oldest and youngest
    too?

Sure...you can be a middle if you want to...(the only always gets
his own way) :-) ...just kidding now...

I have a brother 4 years older and a sister 8 years younger. Boy
did I get a shock when baby came along. Eight years of being top
of the heap, until... the day came!!!

No I hated it, it took me years to understand just why. At last
I like me again (I think!)

I was in the middle with an older sister and a 10 month younger
brother. I really dident care for it much. My sister would boss
me around ALL the time and I would get the greif when my brother
did something wrong because "i was the older and should watch out
    for him."
All in all I wouldent say it sucks but it has a great deal of vacume.
