The following inquiry is from a noter who wishes to remain anonymous.
I'd appreciate it if replies could refrain from including explicit
sexual descriptions. If you would prefer to respond by mail, send

A Hindu sex manual that dates, I believe, from around the
       14th century.

I've seen (briefly) a book called "The Pop-Up Kama Sutra", which
contains cardboard pop-out illustrations and a bit of text from
the original book. Publishers Central Bureau frequently lists it
in their catalog. Great coffee-table conversation starter!

The Kama Sutra may, in some translated editions, be illustrated
with photographs of some of the more erotic cave paintings and
miniatures, but it was probably not originally illustrated.

The place of the erotic in life and theology was different in India
before the British conquest. What to Western eyes is pornographic
seems to have been viewed as a symbol of the creative power of the
gods; what to us is a sex manual may have had the emotional impact
    of a cookbook.

The text divides men and woman into animal types (cows, elephants,
others I forget). It details anatomy, the many different kinds of
touching and kisses and so on. Much of what it describes would
require great flexibility and substantial strength to perform.

As .4 suggests, the Kama-Sutra is an ancient Hindu sex manual. I
tried to read it, a long time ago, but it got very boring after a
while, so I never finished it.

The one thing that sticks in my memory has to do with under-water
sex. The book specifies that it's very important for both partners
to keep their heads above the water...

I also seem to remember that the section that deals with beating
(yes, they did that even than...) specifies the sounds the beaten
partner (the lady, of course) makes. I believe bird chirping sounds
are recommended.

Actually, it discusses techniques for each partner.

I'm curious, is oral sex described in any detail?

Pray, tell: what does that mean? Remember that this book is written in
Sanskrit. *Everything* in it depends on the translator.

I'd like to suggest that this subject would be more suited to the HOLISTIC
Conference at HYDRA::HOLISTIC... There are more knowledgable people there,
and I believe some information on a related subject, Tantric Yoga...
