| Cathy,
Please don't feel like you have to break into some sort of elitist
clique here. Notesfiles can sometimes seem rather cliquish to a RON
(Read Only Noter), much less a newcomer to a particular notesfile, but
believe me, you got friends here no matter how looney you may be (just
look at me - people actually reply to my wacky notes here!), so just
jump right in and have a blast!
Someone (Positive Pat?) also mentioned the Netparty (sorry I don't
have the exact nodename handy) notesfile which is where you can find
out about actual parties of noters (where-ever they may be). I have
yet to access this one, but you can bet it's a top priority for me!
Anyway, we don't bite (too hard -eh?) so join in the disscussion
whenever. Actually, if you do somehow break into some sort of clique
here, could you please let me in on it? If it exists, I surely want to
join too!

| re: -1,
Ooops, I guess it was Kathy Reinig in her note # 27.4, which
made mention of the MTV::NETPARTY notesfile. I have just added this
notesfile to my (massive) Vaxnote directory and I plan to read it
- but first, it's time to catch some zzz's...

| Cat,
All you gotta do is, when you see a note you want to reply to use the REPLY
command and type in what you want to say.
Have fun,
Don.

| Cat,
As a former "RON" (read-only noter), and now a rather copious
writer, I know how you feel. It took a topic that I felt
rather strongly about to get me to start writing, but now
I can't stop!!!
It's a lot of fun, and we REALLY don't bite!!!
Good Luck!

32.6 | So we meet again:-)! | FREMEN::RYAN | Note well! | Tue Aug 05 1986 17:39 | 30 |
| Hello again Cat, glad to help.
If you want to learn the technical aspects of using the NOTES
software, you can access the conference
WARLRD::VAXNOTES_INTRO. If you hit the "7" key on your keypad,
it will be added to your notebook. That's a good place for
asking questions about how to use NOTES without fear of being
told, "That's a stupid question!" (besides MAIL to an
experienced noter, like me:-).
You should print the file ANCHOR::NET$LIBRARY:EASYNOTES.LIS,
which lists all the announced public conferences available on
the network. You can choose the ones that look interesting and
use ADD ENTRY to add them to your notebook and peruse them at
your leisure.
Whenever getting into a new conference, it's a good idea to be
a RON for a little while, so you can get a good feel for what
kinds of topics are discussed there, and what the "style" of
the conference is. Every conference is different - you
shouldn't use a SOAPBOX style of noting in, say, FRIENDS. Do a
directory, read the topics with interesting titles, follow the
conversations for a week or two, and then jump right in (the
water's always warm:-).
And most importantly,
Have fun,
Mike

| Welcome aboard, Cat!
No requirements in this conference except the usual NOTERs' courtesy. In this
particular conference, friendliness, openess, honesty help; but that's true
everywhere.
Jump in, the water's fine!

| I made a little rule for myself that I would not personalize notes
with peoples names. I did this to remind myself that I am responding
to ideas and thoughts not individuals.
I also feel a newcomer might feel shy if they think everyone knows
one another.
But I kind of like seeing people respond to my notes with my name
so I am rethinking this rule.
If there are any newcomers out there would they like to comment.
Thanks

That sounds like a good idea PROVIDED the INDIVIDUAL at the other end
understands this; however, I suspect this is not generally the case and
depending on the circumstances this could be dangerous.

Responding to specific reply numbers (as in 'RE: .9') accomplishes
both purposes; that is: it lets a person know you are responding
directly to them, while, at the same time, lets you address replies
to ideas, rather than to persons.

| Joyce,
I reply to your name because I can't remember the # of your reply... no,
really... when I first joined Digital nearly 5 years ago, I was so *impresesed*
by what felt like a *closeness* where folks used individuals' NAMES instead
of departments or organizations. It seemed to me, coming from the world
of public education where I had been Ms. Smith, and from UMass/Amherst where
I was "744-384..." (just a number), that addressing people by their names
(first and/or last) was such a nice *warm* difference! I vote for names.

| I respond by using both the name and the number. In a fast
paced discussion entries can be added so quickly that as I
follow the discussion I can easily forget which entry was
mine, and if we're on .83 and someone responds to .24, it's
difficult to know just what is being referenced.
I vote for names, too. It's people from which the thoughts
and ideas are coming from.

| I believe one of the ways in which people grow and mature is their
ability to discuss ideas on which they don't necessaily agree.
Can I get unanimous consensus from the floor that we all won't agree
exactly on anything?
But this is just my opinion and is no more valid than yours.
