1262.0. "V5.5-2 & VAX7800 questions." by OTOOA::JPOND () Mon May 05 1997 14:54
Hi there,
We are bidding a VAX7800 as an upgrade from a customer, and I have some
specific questions regarding VMS support:
1) As I understand it, the cabinet version of the 7800 SOC says that
VMS V5.5-2 is a supported operating system. Does this apply to the
rackmount version as well (SOC not clear on this detail)?
2) Does the appropriate V5.5-2 CD-ROM come with the VAX 7800, or does
one have to specify an additional part number to obtain the kit? If so,
what is that part number?
3) Besides setting the console variable ">>>set compat_mode V55", are
there other variables to set?
4) The SOC states that a VAX7800 running V5.5-2 requires "console
firmware V4.2". How does one obtain this firmware?
5) Are there device support issues with V5.5-2? Specifically, I am
concerned about 4GB drives and HSD30 controllers.
Thanks in advance for the help. Regards,
Jim

| One other query on this topic:
6) In the SOC, it states that OpenVMS VAX Concurrent Use licenses are
for systems running V6.2 or greater, and that OpenVMS VAX Distributed
Interactive User licenses are for systems running V6.0 or V6.1. What
type of licenses do we quote for systems that are to run V5.5-2?
Thanks,
Jim

| I can answer questions regarding the firmware, but the VMS license
questions might better be asked in a VMS conf if no-one else in here
can help.
There's no technical reason that I'm aware of why the rackmount won't
work the same as the cab system with respect to VMS V5.5-2.
Latest Console Firmware is V4.3. This will be pre-loaded in the new
system. The SOC refers to the minimum version required. The cab system
includes a documentation kit (Users Guide etc) which in turn includes
the firmware kit (CD and release notes). Unless the rackmount system
omits the documentation, you should get the CD.
There are no known devide support issues in the latest version of
console code. 4GB (and greater) drives are supported, as is HSD30.
