| Q2 - Probably was an electric car. Related, perhaps is that we have
an electric car business in town (at the end of Nason Street).
When the powertrain on my car gives out, I'm seriously considering
electrification.
Q3 - Yes and Yes (though not as many as there used to be... sadly).
Q4 - Yes -- but you have to go to Stow to find it! I don't think it
is anything official, but the Stow supermarket (Star? I can never
keep these things straight) had some shirts just as you walked in.
[I could probably arrange for a WAVM tee-shirt if you want something
a bit more obscure. WAVM is the school/town radio & cable TV
station.]

| The only building I know of that can be seen from the road is where
you'll see a door leading "into the hill" - near a huge tree. I
believe that is not for pulic use or entrance. I don't know the
technical word, but it's where they keep (kept) the caskets prior to
burial (when the harsh New England weather causes the ground to freeze)
after the "spring thaw".
There is/was another building toward the back of the original section
that was the "maintenance building" - but I don't think you are
referring to that.

| Hi,
Born and raised in Maynard. Lin Snow here. The building in the cemetery
use to be used (so I'm told by older family members) in the winter
to store caskets when the ground was too frozen to prepare for burial.
How correct this info is, I'm not sure.
The Maynard Post Office once sold T-Shirts with Maynard on them. Don't
know if they still do?
Lots of folks from Maynard work for Digital. Many more used to work IN
Maynard....now lots of us commute to other facilities in other towns :(

Yes, and I think I rode in it on Sunday! At least, I did get
to ride in a 15-year old electric car, red, rather rectangular.
No transmission, no gear shift, only one speed forward plus one
speed reverse. Not much heat, really meant for warm weather
commuting. Room for driver plus one passenger. Ten 12-volt
batteries. Costs about US$4 per week for commuting vs US$5 or
US$6 for commuting via the gasoline vehicle. Gets plugged in at
work, for recharging, so then the owner's cost is only US$2!

Maynard's burial site. I guess I should stop putting flowers on it,
eh? :')
Live and learn, I guess.

| If so, he was one huge guy!
My dad tells of the story of as a kid he was atop the little hill
shouting echoes down the little "chimney". Seems the caretaker was in
there and shouted something back...freaked him right out so much so
that he ran down the hill out the cemetary and all the way home (to Elm
St) without stopping!!!

First of all, I admire your courage in taking the commuter train from Boston
to visit Maynard, even though the nearest stop is 4 miles away.
There are very few people who live in Maynard AND work at a Maynard Digital
plant. There are even fewer who walked to work at the Mill while it still had
a lot of DECcies in it. The problem is that people in Digital move around so
much (both voluntarily and due to group moves) that few people can establish
a residence near (e.g. less than 5 miles) their workplace and expect to remain
this close to their workplace for long. It's an entirely different situation
from when the Maynard and other textile mills were being used for their or-
iginal purpose.

Perhaps the place he wanted to go in Maynard was 4 miles from the South Acton
train stop. Maynard center is about two or three miles from the train.
(I'm always amused by the signs that say, for example, "Sudbury 1 mile" and are
located in Sudbury...)

| Yes, the Tourist from Nottingham still drops in here occasionally
(evidence my reply to 475, the clock chime note).
Thanks Dave, Sandy, Lin, Sally, Jim, Chris, Bob, Bob, and Brian for all
the interesting replies.
Re .8; "I admire your courage"? - Why "courage" Bob? Is it dangerous
to travel by the commuter train? How else would I get to Maynard from
Boston at minimal cost? If there hadn't been a taxi at West Acton I
could have walked it in about 30 mins. (They thought I was strange in
Detroit last week when I suggested walking 1 mile. Later, I agreed
with them!)
Has anyone seen a Maynard T-shirt recently? I really think someone
should produce a Mill T-shirt before we move on.

I have been riding the rails for a long time and have never had a
problem. Now the underground in Boston is another story but that
was several years ago and they are getting it corrected. I go in
to Boston on the rail to MIT twice a week with no problems and I
walk from the station in acton to Maynard and I believe you will
find it is a nice 2.2 km walk.

| I also have taken the train from Acton by myself when my husband used
to work in Cambridge. I never had any problems regarding my safety.
I have to admit I haven't walked it either way, but it wouldn't be bad
as I used to live in very close proximity to Bob Cansler (Hi, Bob!)
My husband used to use the train to get to work until his schedule
got changed and he needed his car in town.
Anywho...it's a great way to travel. Sure beats the highways and
paying for in town parking!
Cheers,
Lin Snow

| I take the silence on T-shirts to mean that there aren't any at
present. Looks like I'll have to make my own.
If anyone does find one bearing a pic of the clock tower I will swop
it for something similar from Nottingham (Robin Hood or something).

| Re .10 (I think): You are right, it's only 2 or 3 miles from the South Acton
train station to the Mill.
Why I said the "courage" thing: not because of any danger in riding the
train, but the idea of getting off the train in an unfamiliar place and
walking 2-3 miles from there. And committing yourself to walking back to the
station in time to catch the train back. Now that I think of it, it's really
not a big deal.

I understand what you are saying, but I did it all the time in England
and Europe; and believe me I missed my share of trains, not to mention
staying lost most of the time.
