438.0. "Chubby's Chicken & Ribs" by TOPDOC::AHERN (Dennis the Menace) Fri Aug 13 1993 10:27

Has anybody tried Chubby's Chicken and Ribs on Main Street yet?

We got a coupon for it and my wife wants to try it out.

I asked about it in the EATS file, but nobody's been yet.

We get take-out from Chubby's about once a week.

The chicken is good, the fish is good (and certainly cheaper than the
Quarterdeck), and the ribs were incinerated. Their "chubby fries"
are chunks of about 1/4 potato each, fried with a peppery coating.

The place is run by the same crew as Lando's, so they're perpetually
confused, and orders are usually late. I heard them try to tell
the delivery guy how to find Waltham Street, and it sounded like a Three
Stooges routine. "You know the street out there? That's Main Street.
Now you take a left because it's one way...". I'm not kidding. You
order dinner delivered, and the guy will probably drive to Rhode
Island. Any eight-year-old knows Maynard better than that.

There's a door into Lando's, so I often go there and buy a salad or
soda when I'm waiting for the Chubby's order.

As in "burnt to an inedible crisp" or as in "wicked hot"?

As in "up in smoke". Asking if the ribs were "wicked hot" is like
suggesting that someone chew on some charcoal, to determine the
    spicing.

That was the first week Chubby's was open. Maybe they've improved.

We like the "Chicken Char" sandwiches...

We definitely like the fish and chips...lots for a good price. I agree
it sure beats the Quarterdeck price. Don't like the ribs. Charred
    chicken is OK.

Well, the first thing we noticed when we got there was a sign on the
register saying that the coupon on the Purity Supreme tape was a
misprint. Instead of 1/2 off on any seafood plate, the deal was 1/2
off of one seafood plate if you bought the other at full price.

OK, two of us had the shrimp plate at $9.95. We each got 7 good sized
but overcooked shrimp, a heap of fries, and some cole slaw that was
    past its prime.

It was OK, but not anything to draw us back for another try.

438.8MSG alertMR4DEC::DERAMOMon Aug 16 1993 13:288
When this place first opened, I went in to ask about the ingredients in
the chicken -- I'm sensitive to MSG, and inquired specifically about
that. The order-taker at the counter didn't seem to know what MSG was.
He asked a person out back, who said they use MSG in the marinade for
all chicken. Because MSG is added early in the food preparation (as
opposed to at the last minute, as in many oriental restaurants) you
can't ask for chicken without MSG. I don't eat at Chubby's.
