425.0. "Maynard Area Paving Contractors" by MSBCS::A_HARRIS () Mon Apr 12 1993 09:53

I'm getting quotes on paving my driveway in Stow. Does anyone have
    experience with:

    	Lazaro (Acton)
    	Shoemaker and Jennings (Concord)
    	Nashoba (Acton)
    	Paul Smith (Hopkinton)
    	Davis Brothers (Hudson)

The first three are in the same $ ballpark. Davis Brothers is a LOT
cheaper for what sounds like the same job, but the quote was given
rather casually and only verbally. But then again, maybe the overhead
for a Hudson operation is cheaper than one in Concord or Acton...(?)

There is some tricky drainage/grading work involved, and I want to make
absolutely certain we hire a good contractor.

    This is cross-posted in Home_work.

    Thanks,
    Andrea

I can give a thumbs up to Nashoba Paving. They did a top quality job
for us when they first started the business.

Whatever you do, get a WRITTEN proposal stating how many inches of
binding (underlayment) tar and how many inches of topcoat will be used.
The binder will be the thicker of the two.

If you choose someone that you haven't any references for, make
arrangements to be home when they do the job and make sure they adhere
    to the contract.

I do know that Shoemaker and Jennings as well as Nashoba have fine
reputations. There are other companies that will skimp on material.

We used Nashoba to replace and enlarge our driveway. They weren't the
cheapest, but their plan was good. We'd talked to folks who would
raise the level of the addition to meet the existing then top coat
both. Nashoba removed the old (turned out there were 2) put down
crushed stone and put 2 coats down. All was done in 24 hrs, removal
and stone on one afternoon, paving the next morning. They were also
very careful to grade for water run off as well as prevent low spots so
    we wouldn't get puddles.

I have had friends have similar work done. The contractor put in the
base coat and took 3 weeks to return for the top coat.

Hi,

Shoemaker and Jennings did our driveway. They took out the old stuff, brought
in some loam (for a place that no longer would be paved) and put down a really
nice driveway. Very professional, and they have an excellent reputation
(we checked around quite a bit). And they moved really fast: within hours of
our accepting the proposed contract.

FWIW, you might try negotiating a bit. We had several people bidding on the job
and when they found out about each other, they started dropping their bids.
(But don't tell them I told you so :^)
