Last Thursday, the School Committee offered Donald Kennedy the job of Superintendent of Schools. He accepted immediately, subject to negotiation of salary and starting date. Dr. Kennedy is presently Superintendent of the Duxbury schools. He has been a principal, history teacher and English teacher. He also teaches at U. Lowell, and he and the Duxbury town manager teach an adult ed. course on Winston Churchill. His doctorate is from Harvard, in the area of school curriculum. Dr. Kennedy knows the town of Maynard; when he taught in Weston some years ago, he came out here to play tuba in the town band. Kennedy stated flatly that he wanted this job until he retires. He plans to move from Duxbury to this area. -Steve

Good news! From the little I had heard about each of the candidates, he seemed to have the best makeup. I also liked his stated desire to assist in teaching one class a day (with the approval of the teacher). Steve

Glad to hear we finally have chosen someone. I was wondering, for those of us who were not involved in the selection process, if you could give a "25-words or less" statement as to why he wanted to be superintendant in Maynard and a similar statement as to why he was selected over the other candidates

>Glad to hear we finally have chosen someone. I was wondering, for those of us >who were not involved in the selection process, if you could give a "25-words >or less" statement as to why he wanted to be superintendant in Maynard ... As near as I can tell, Dr. Kennedy believes that he can make a real difference in Maynard. He talked about Maynard being the right size so that positive change can impact every student, and that the citizens were very supportive of the schools. He was very positive about the schools' relationship with DEC, and the MEAP scores. >and a >similar statement as to why he was selected over the other candidates You're really asking what each School Committee member thought. Since people don't always bare their souls in a public meeting, I really couldn't give an accurate anwer. I do think that the search committee named four good candidates. -Steve |
