We received a letter from my kids teachers and my wife has talked to Mr. Hill about a new program they are starting in the Green Meadow school. They are going to let some teachers teach the same class two years in a row. For example a teacher would teach the same class in the first grade and then the kids would have the same teacher for the second grade. The school is going to test it next year with a couple of teachers. I believe this will be voluntary, parents can ask for a different teacher if the want. Mr. Hill told my wife that the first grade teachers feel they are just getting the kids going about half way thru the school year and they feel if the teachers had the same kids two years they would be able to do a better job with the kids. This is the type of progressive thinking/teaching that will benefit the students of Maynard and Maynard school system.

It's funny how much of the thinking in education is cyclic. My home town school system in Illinois kept one teacher with the same kids for 1st and 2nd grade when I was in grade school, eons ago. I remember showing up for the first day of 2nd grade, and feeling very comfortable that I was in Mrs. Johnson's class again. With a good teacher who gets to know the kids' needs and individualizes the program, this might work very well. -Steve |
