361.0. "Green Meadow School -- 1st Impression" by LDYBUG::CLOSE () Mon Mar 23 1992 14:55

I abhor the idea and practice of School Choice. I think it's a wealthy
Republican governor's scam to direct more money to his primary constituents --
the wealthier suburbs. But because I have a 5-year-old who will be
starting kindergarten in September, and because now we're in the era
of "Choice", starting public school is a selection process.

I've read all the articles and heard all of the propaganda about Maynard's
schools during the long, miserable regionalization debate. It's doesn't
paint a good picture of Maynard's schools. So I went over to Green Meadow
and met with Frank Hill, and took a tour.

I was very impressed! I was impressed with the principal. I like his
philosophy, his easy-going manner, and his obvious respect for young children.

I was impressed with the building. What a great place for kids! I like the
big, circular design. The chaos of the rooms arranged by the kids. I
was impressed with the library, designed on a kid's scale.

Computers everywhere -- I like that.

I watched some classes in progress, and I am happily anticipating the
Fall, when my son can be a part of it.

Now, granted, 90 minutes of conversation and walking around may not
touch on everything. But I came away from my session feeling that Maynard
has a fine school at Green Meadow, with a great staff, and a great
approach to elementary education. I think my son will be happy there.

Parents with kids at Green Meadow -- how is it?

Parents who are sending kids elsewhere through School Choice -- what have
you found that I may have overlooked?

> Parents with kids at Green Meadow -- how is it?

Although our son is only in 1st grade, we've been very happy with the results.
The teachers have been terrific and the surroundings, resources and
professionalism of the entire staff is top shelf in my opinion.

You might want to keep an eye on the news later in the week. A couple of
4th graders will be talking to the shuttle astronauts and Ch's 4, 5 & 7 are
scheduled to be at the school to tape it. It was supposed to take place this
Thursday, but with the delay of the launch until today, I'm not sure if the
schedule has changed.

I have two daughters (2nd grade and Kindergarten) at Green Meadow.
Since my wife is the Volunteer Coordinator for the school, I experience
a lot of the behind the scenes activity, that reinforce my feelings
that GM is an Above Average K-4 school.

I suggest you attend some Parents' Group meetings -- you might be able to hear
some more candid opinions of the school, staff, etc. It will help round out
what you have seen in your short tour (my guess/hope is that it more or less
reinforce most of of your opinions).

I think I have a generally good opinion of GMS (my two children went through
it) -- many of the teachers there *are* excellent. I recently "lectured" there,
and found the students most engaging and curious.

p.s. The ham radio link with the shuttle was indeed moved back one day (all
shuttle schedules are based on "mission elapsed time"). While the Boston
weasels will be there for their 20 second sound bite, the local high-school
cable station, WAVM, will be broadcasting the linkup live on channel 61 along
with some background material they've been working on. If we're incredibly
lucky, the shuttle will have downlink video of the event -- but the current
NASA TV schedule doesn't have us listed (a couple of hours later a school in
Texas does (hmmmm, coincidence?)) so I wouldn't count on it.

I have a second and first grader in Green Meadow and I feel the school
is top shelf. All my kids teachers are excellent. You will not regret
sending your kids to Maynard's schools.

Just a quick comment about your opening paragraph. I suggest you take a
look in the MASSACHUSETTS and EDUCATION_ISSUES notes files and educate
yourself better than Arthur Chase has regarding potential inequities
in School Choice. The wealthy communities are not participating in
choice, frankly, because they don't need to. Yes, there are examples
of inequities like Gloucester/Manchester and Brockton/Avon but the vast
majority of school systems participating in this program have per pupil
costs below the state average and in some cases are taking pupils from
    more well-to-do communities.

I had two sons go through the Green Meadow School and was very pleased
with the results and with Mr. Hill's attitude, accessibility,
    experience and approach.

All but one of my sons' teachers were excellent.

School Age Child Care at GM is a very nice optiom, though not cheap, for those
parents are working, especially in during Kindegarten.

361.8Shuttle conversation on WBZ radioEOS::ARMSTRONGSun Nov 29 1992 09:404
WBZ did a segment on the kids in Green Meadow talking with the
shuttle crew last night on their 'kids' radio show.

    Nice going!
