340.3 | DeLeon brothers in the Middlesex | HELIX::RUZICH | VAXELN Realtime Software Engineering | Sun Feb 02 1992 12:21 | 15 |
| The Sunday Middlesex News sports section has a front-page feature on
the DeLeon brothers, Jarreau and Armando, and how they're contributing
to the Maynard High sports programs.
If you saw any MHS football games, you probably noticed this very
large, fast kid dominating much of the defensive play. That's Armando.
He's a junior, and colleges are trying to recruit him already. Now he's
playing basketball, not only grabbing rebounds as you would expect a
big player, but also shooting well.
Jarreau is a sophomore, smaller than his brother, but a very quick,
aggressive basketball player. He's a lineman in football.

The basketball season has finally arrived and the team seems off
to a good start. Ankle injuries seem to be the plague this year.
Armando DeLeon, who broke his ankle in football, finally can start
playing basketball...he got into his first game Monday night against
Narragansett.
This year there are 2 games on Saturday afternoon. Most of the
JV games start at 6PM, varsity at 7:30.
There were MANY fans that drove out to Narragansett Monday
night, but the team loves loud cheering and NOISE... it pumps
them up !!! So come and help the team keep on winning!
The first home game is TONIGHT against Littleton.

| The team plays at the Springfield Civic Center on Wednesday
10 March at 4PM... They play the Western Mass winner, Smith
Academy (not sure what town Smith Academy is in -- Deerfield??
anyone know for sure???)... Maynard is currently the Central
Mass Division 3 winner. If they win on Wednesday they'll play
the north/South winner at the Worcester Centrum on Saturday.
The cheerleaders are incredibly excellent! The basketball team
doesn't believe they can win without them. It's worth a trip
out to Springfield on Wednesday just to hear them cheer! ... and
then ALL fans can cheer on the basketball team. They get really
aggressive and play good ball when the fans are NOISY, and they
mean really LOUD and supportive!
Maynard played Smith Academy in 1989, in Springfield, also...

340.10 | Yesterdays Western Mass Finals | TWINS::ARMSTRONG | | Mon Mar 08 1993 14:09 | 19 |
| I watched yesterday's Western Mass finals between Mohawk
and Smith Academy. A good friend's son plays on the
Mohawk team, so I went with them to the Cage at UMASS.
Mohawk had lost to SA twice during the year. They nearly beat
them this time...ahead most of the game. My friend's son caused
a turnover with 15 seconds to go...may have cost Mohawk the game.
SA has two good players and then the rest of the team. The two
good guys largley just play with themselves and get fed by the
other 3 players. One guy is pretty tall and has some good moves
but is very slow. they other guy is likely the best player
in Western Mass...very good moves to the basket, the real
leader on the floor, but not real strong on defense (seemed
VERY concerned about committing fouls).
Mohawk nearly beat them....it would have been fun to watch
them play Maynard! Go Get'm Maynard!

| Maynard won again! They beat Smith Academy this afternoon
by about 5 pts. I actually dont recall the final score.
It was not a high scoring game.
SA came out and really walked on Maynard for the first half.
Not sure what was happening. After the half, a different
Maynard team came out and played a VERY physical game.
They completey shut off SA's offense and turned around from
unable to get a rebound to dominating the boards. They
also started hitting some shots. At one point they were up
by more than 10 pts. SA closed on them but they held
on for the win.
The Cheerleaders were good!
SA is from Hatfield, by the way. Hatfield is just north of
Northampton. They are a real 'BBall town'....no football,
mainly BBall and Soccer.
Congrats to Maynard. I still wish they had played Mohawk.

340.18 | A pat on the back to the MHS basketball programs! | KALI::MORGAN | | Thu Mar 18 1993 07:58 | 16 |
| Congrats to the MHS basketball teams! JV, varsity, girls and boys all
did a fantastic job. The boys team lost in the Div. III state finals
yesterday, 68-54, to a superior Lynn Classical team.
Right off the bat it was 14-0 Lynn. It took Maynard 5-6 minutes to put
any points on the board. The Tigers roared back making it 22-21 at one
point, but could never take the lead. The half ended with Lynn nursing
a 34-28 lead. The start of the 2nd half was a replay of the first,
with Lynn going on an 18-0 run. Maynard got it back to within 9 points
or so with about 3 minutes left in the game, but a 24 point lead was too
much to overcome.
These kids provided plenty of excitement for an awful lot of people.
Thanks for the ride guys.
