329.0. "Teacher resigns" by AKOCOA::LESAGE () Thu Oct 03 1991 15:09

My son's second grade teacher (Mrs. Hartwell) resigned last week. She
was a special ed. teacher prior to this year and with the cuts she was
transferred to teach the second grade. Apparently she did not like
this assignment and resigned. The school is now interviewing
three teachers who were laid off last year to fill the position
    starting Monday.

Unfortunately, I heard that rumor too. Knowing her through a friend
your RUMOR probably has a 10% element of truth but the overriding
reasons were explained in her letter to the parents and are personal
    to her.

What is true is that some teachers are unhappy with their new
assignments and the way it was handled. At least one teacher was told
that they would be teaching a different class weeks before school
starts. That doesn't give anyone any time to prepare. This becomes
even more difficult when the school doesn't have departmental plans
that one can follow to set up what they will teach.

I also question some of the new assignments. Especially those that
have gone from a non-teaching position to a teaching position. That's
    a different issue.

Back to Amy. I do hope that the administration does the right thing
this time and gets a good teacher to replace her because the school
will be losing a good one.

The replacement for Mrs. Hartwell is Mr. Swain, who will start Monday
    10-7-91.

Last year you elevated these complaints to the principal, superintendent, and
school committee? What was their response?
