303.0. "Lease Maynard H.S. to DEC?" by GTIGUY::CLOSE () Mon Jun 17 1991 12:29

Now that regionalization has passed in Maynard (and I assume it will pass in
Acton), there may be an opportunity for Maynard to make some money from the
soon-empty High School building.

The Ed Services group is moving from Bedford to PKO. I know this because
my group is being kicked out to make room. I've heard that DEC will be
spending big money (millions) to renovate PK3 to make classrooms.

100 yards away sits an empty (in '92) classroom building with ample parking.
Is anyone who reads this file connected in some official capacity with the
town of Maynard? Are you aware of this possibility?

It might be nice to see Maynard lease or sell the High School building to
Digital for Ed Services training, and at the same time I think DEC could
save some or most of the millions the company might spend turning PK3
into a classroom building.

    Maynard High School will not be empty. The Fowler JH kids will move
    into MHS. Maybe DEC can buy Fowler instead.

Now I'm confused. I hope it's ok to mention this in this file (mr. moderator?)
but my understanding is that if regionalization goes through, Fowler will
be available for rent, and the highschool will be used by kids in the
lower grades (making more room in the elementary school). If regionalization
passes, the kids that would go to school in Acton are in grades 7-12.

It's an intriguing thought to ask DEC if they're interested in one of the
schools for classrooms. I wonder what the retrofitting costs are for a
school (that is not entirely wheelchair accessible) on property that DEC
does not own vs. the costs for property that DEC does own.

I would think that anyone who wishes to pursue this could contact the
selectcritters for a pointer to the appropriate townsperson to talk to
and DEC's real estate office for a pointer to the appropriate person
at DEC to talk to.

303.3If there's an empty building, there's potential revenue for the townSTORIE::KALLISPumpkins -- Nature's greatest gift.Mon Jun 17 1991 14:405
Re .2 (Liz):

On costs, it would take less to buy either school than to refit PKO3.

    The Roosevelt School on Nason St. is empty right now, and the
    playground in back (on Glendale) could be designed for parking quiote
    easily.

    I would like to see this note closed out.... Maynard High School
    has not left the area; I would rather see opinions on how
    we can make the school and the spirit better.
