233.0. "Tour at the Mill? Who to contact?" by UTROP1::VDBOS () Tue Jun 12 1990 04:50

    HI,

I've been working for Digital (Netherlands) for 8 years now and finally
I decided to visit the U.S. for 1 month. I'll visit Boston somewhere
in the week of September 24th. So it's obvious that I like to visit
the Mill. After have read some notes I discovered that Bill Hughes
is the one to contact to arrange such a visit. Since that note was
dated somewhere in '89 I wonder if Bill still does arrange such
    tours.

Is Bill the one to contact or does anyone have any other suggestions?

    Thanks for all you responses!

    Regards,

According to the Security Department, you should contact Corporate
    Information at DTN 223-4479.

I have seen notes referring to tours by Bill Hughes DTN 223-2700 and Stu
    Covey DTN 223-7497.

Good Luck and let us know which _is_ the most current tour information.

I tried to get a tour of the Mill for some Fowler Junior High
students during Maynard History week and sent a note to both
Bill Hughes and Stu Covey and got no response from either one.

    School ended yesterday.

Sorry to report that Bill Hughes is gone...he took the buy-out in
conjunction with retirement. Bill still drops by the office ~once a
week or so, but as for the tours, I have no idea who is giving them.
I recognize Stu Covey's name, but don't really know who he is.

Plant Engineering (where Bill worked) was offered the buy-out and so
many people took it that we're in deep sneakers (4 of the 5 plumbers
in the Mill, all but one person in the Mailroom, etc.)! [BTW: I
don't work in or with Plant Engineering, but my office on the same
     floor in the next building.]

As I suggested in a previous reply, I called Corporate Information.

According to them, you should call 223-2700, which was Bill Hughes DTN.
They stated that that organization would still be scheduling Mill
tours. They also suggested CALLING rather than writing.

Good Luck and let us know which _is_ the best contact for tour
    information.

I am the Manager of the Building Services at the Mill. Customer Tours
are the responsibility of my group. We still conduct tours on a
regular basis, however our tours are primarily designed to assist sales
and marketing folks with customers who have expressed interest in
seeing the complex. We have, at times, made exceptions for employees,
but please realize that our resources are limited and customers are our
priority. For scheduling and information contact Joan Hastings
(Asabet::JHastings) or dial 223-2700. The next printing of the Mill
Site Services Guide will include the "Customer Tours" phone number.

I hope this will serve to clear up any confusion. As always, you can
call the Central Order Desk at 223-2308 when information such as this
is required. We will do our best to satisfy you needs.

233.15Mill tours for employees?MILKWY::MORRISONBob M. FXO-1/28 228-5357Fri Aug 17 1990 12:2110
I worked at the Mill for 9 months in 1981 and got to know it fairly well.
I got to look up into the clock tower (it was possible at the time) but didn't
get to see the steam engine or hydroelectric generator. It is no longer possible
to look up into the clock tower because the stairway is behind a locked door.
I would be interested in taking an employee tour of the mill in which people
see things that you can't see on your own, such as the above, and hear some of
the history that would not be obvious on a self-guided tour. Are tours like
this ever held? I realize the Tour Group is probably too busy to arrange tours
like this, but maybe an ordinary Mill employee could run such a tour with help
from Security.
233.16Thanks for the visit!!!!!UTROP1::VDBOSTue Oct 09 1990 11:3615
    Hi,

I just got back from my trip to the U.S. and I visited the Mill thanks
to Joan Hastings and Bob Anderson. Although I arrived 1 hour late Bob
was still prepared to give us a short look around in the Clock Tower.
(The delay was caused by the Public transportation which turned out to
    be not so Public.......)

It was nice to see the roots of DEC and like to thank Joan and Bob for
their effort to arrange things at a short notice.

233.17Fowler School Tour of the MillSENIOR::IGNACHUCKTue Feb 05 1991 20:3827
This afternoon I was the Digital sponsor for a tour of the Mill for
the Fowler Middle School Student Council. The tour was coordinated
by Joan Hastings and conducted by Joel Schur and Bob Anderson of the
Maynard Area Property Development Group. My thanks to all three for
    the outstanding job.

The tour included an explanation of the water power system, a ride
on the famous "three door elevator" at the intersections of buildings
4, 3, and 7, (which I had to operate now and then during the late
60's) and a tour of the Town Clock Tower. The students got to wind
the clock and one boy found his grandfather's signature on one of
the reflector panels of a clock face. They saw a video of Digital's
history in the Conference Center, and were all presented with Town
Clock pins and a History of the Mill brochure.

I've done this tour a number of times, but the thing that stuck out
in my mind this time was the friendliness of the Digital employees,
from the receptionist and tour guides to the employees we met in
the halls. Everyone smiled and said hello, which I'm sure made
an impression on the students and the teachers.

These are tough times for our Company, but I could still feel the
old Digital as I walked around. I haven't worked in the Mill for
many years, but that feeling is still there. Can't explain it,
but it ain't there in other DEC facilities.

I have to agree with you, Frank. I've done two hitches at the Mill and
worked at several other facilities. There _is_ no other facility that
gives me that "feeling" you mentioned. It must be that the mill has
it's own ambiance found only with its own walls.

I am the fourth generation of my family to work there, so there is a
    special meaning for me.

233.19Still going?PEKING::GERRYTFri Oct 08 1993 12:3411
Are the tours still available in even harder times?
Is there access to the 'computer museum' with some explanations/guide
as to the development of Digital computers from the start through to
    Alpha chip.
I wouldn't want to be a hindrance to the Property group, but would love
to see the facility where it all began, and am only over in Boston for
    a week.

    Thanks,

Nobody answered this yet, it seems. Does anybody know who to contact
to arrange a tour of the clock tower, or any other part of the Mill for
    a school group?
