I have an idea. In the past thirty years or so, Maynard has produced over 1,000 highly skilled musicians, through the Maynard School System Music Program, mainly through the efforts of Charlie Garabedian, our retired Music Director. I have to believe that there are hundreds of trumpets and clarinets gathering dust in closets around the area, just waiting for the opportunity to play "When the Saints Come Marching In" one more time! IF we could gather together a group of Maynard High School Grads to march in one or two parades a year (Memorial Day and the Christmas Parade) with no uniforms and only two or three commonly known songs, could we gather enough interest to create a 100 member band? We could include alumni majorettes and cheerleaders too. This gets interesting.... Maybe Mr. G. would agree to lead us. If we did it for Memorial Day (not this year, of course), maybe we could have an outing at Crowe Park as part of an annual Band reunion. I'd be willing to organize it, since my fondest memories of MHS were with the Band, and I'd love to hear the drumbeat echo off the mill one more time, but remember that I played the drums and all my music was on one line!! Comments? Frank

Karen, I have a sincere interest in old drummers, having spent seven years in the High School band as a drummer myself!! Before you get the impression that I spent seven years in High School, let me explain... In the late fifties, the MHS music program had a kind of "farm system" that allowed talented musicians to be members of the High School Band. Four of us regularly got passes from the Roosevelt School to walk to the High School (on Summer Street) to practice with the High School Band. It may be the answer to some trivia question, but I played in the 1960 High School Graduation ceremonies while a member of the Class of 1966!! I even saw MY bass drum today in the Memorial Day Parade, still in use by the High School Band.....I could spot it anywhere! Frank | |||||

As you can see by the overwhelming respose to 228., I have been looking at other means to get an Alumni-type band going. For those interested, The Maynard Community Band is still alive and looking for help. Call Alex DeGrappo if you would like join. I talked to Alex last month, and though my old drummer wrists are gone after 20 or so years, I am considering giving it a try..... Could be fun. Frank |
