I don't want to be surprised at town meeting this year. I want to get a copy of the warrant early, read it and maybe discuss it with people. What's the right forum for doing that? Are there any groups that get together to discuss it? How about MNPA? Are they still active? How about regular meetings in town? Which are the right ones to discuss articles at? Or would I have to go to each board in turn? -- hs

Under the present "charter" the Finance Committee holds one or more open meetings to discuss warrant articles. Art, please let us know the dates of your sessions for this year. The budget process is not as mysterious as one might think. Most, if not all budget discussions are open to the public. The problem is in making the general public AWARE that meetings are taking place. The cluttered bulletin board in the town building is obviously not the answer, based on the turnouts at committee meetings. I have received much more voter input through this notesfile than at all Charter Commission meetings in the last 11 months. EDITORIAL COMMENT: The town fathers and mothers need to hold a series of "TOWN GOVERNMENT 101" seminars for the general public. I have spent over 1000 hours of my time reviewing seven inches of paper in the past 11 months in an attempt to understand how this town operates in order to form an effective chterd. Town government ain't easy, folks! I think that the various town boards and departments should explain what they do, how they do it, and why they do it, in a public forum. I also think that the Selectmen (or Selectpersons, Hal) should open their office on Saturday mornings for a general open house for anyone to come in and chat. Frank | |||||
