123.0. "Compost project needs volunteers" by VAXRT::RUZICH (How many in your quartet?) Wed Oct 12 1988 17:51
The Maynard Board of Health has organized a leaf composting project.
This year it will be operating on a trial basis for the homes located
on the Tuesday and Wednesday trash pickup routes.
Jerry Collins, Maynard Health Dept., is looking for volunteers to assist
in the distribution of the paper bio-degradeable bags for leaf collection.
He especially needs volunteers for the areas of Acton St., Concord St.,
Brown St., Summer St., Silverhill Rd. and the general vicinity. If you
can help, please call Jerry at 897-1002.
Bags will be distributed this Sunday, Oct. 16; raindate Oct. 23. The bags
will be picked up at the Roosevelt School around 1:00 and volunteers can
discuss the distribution system.
The actual leaves pickup days will be Nov.15 & 16. Interested residents
in other parts of town are encouraged to contact Jerry.

| RE: .1
From what I understand, no one's really decided. This is a pilot
program, and they first have to decide whether to go implement the
program all over town or not.
There's talk of using the compost in town parks & the cemetery,
or of giving it away for peoples' gardens.
Maynard is small enough that participatory democracy is the real thing
here. Call up the guy who runs the program and you may end up in
charge of something.

| The Town of Arlington used to do this. They would, however, mix
in the sand that was swept up by the streetsweepers in the Spring
and there was some question about whether this made the resultant
soil too salty for gardens.
