For those town residents who don't know - a new playground is being constructed on the grounds of the Green Meadow elementary school. This playground is not just for the use of the school, but is considered a town facility. Both children and parents have contributed to the design of the playground - which is being done by Learning Structures, Inc. The company provides the architectural and basic "foundation" for the playground (e.g., landscaping, concrete work, etc.) - WE provide the labor for the building of the playground fixtures (the swings, slides, and so on). All of the materials and time are being donated by local businesses. What we need now are people to help put this together. You don't have to be a master craftsman to contribute. The work will be organized into teams with someone who knows what they are doing at the helm (well, that's the plan...). We're putting up the playground over Columbus day weekend (that's October 8-10th, I believe). A contribution of your time for any part of that weekend will be greatly appreciated - it's a great opportunity to work on a community project. Please send me mail (or reply here) if you are interested in helping out (just don't get double-counted by telling other people as well!). Thanks, - dave

A general meeting will be held on June 16th at 7:30 PM at the Green Meadow School. At that time, the proposed playground design will be presented for discussion and comment. After the discussion smaller groups will form to plan specific tasks and timetables. They are also in a materials acquisition mode right now - I believe a list of things that are needed will be available. - dave | |||||

Well, the playground is now built... Being one of the "worker bees" over the past weekend I can say that, as far as I am concerned, the cunstruction of the playground was a very enjoyable and worthwhile effort. The children of Maynard, and the residents as a whole have a very large, beautiful playground for all to use. My understanding is that is one of the largest playgrounds of its type in the area, if not all of New England. The construction effort was a lot of work but at the same time a lot of fun. We all could have done without working in the rain all day Saturday but I understand that nearly everyone who signed up showed up anyway. Sunday had a larger turnout and there was even a good number of people on hand on Monday to finish up. Everyone pitched in and worked together to complete the task at hand. Store owners in town were overly cooperative. Some of them even opened up on Sunday morning and on Monday (a holiday) so that missing supplied could be obtained). I encourage everyone to stop by and look at the playground. For those of you who are uncertain of the location, it is located in front of Green Meadow Elementary School. It is something that everyone should be proud of. It also shows what a community can do when then band together toward a common goal. On 117. West of the 117/27 intersection. Next to the Dodge dealership. You will see the sign for the entrance. When I read 'in front of the school' I visualized between the school and 117, which is the logical front. I guess it is outside the front door, which is actually on the 'side' as you look from 117. |
