85.0. "Major plans for Bldg. 4 of the Mill" by JON::MORONEY (-- swapped out --) Mon Feb 29 1988 22:04

Has anyone else seen the plans for some Major renovations for Bldg. 4 of the
Mill? If not, I'll summarize. This is probably news to most of you.

1) A Large, stepped auditorium of some sort is to be built in 4-5. This will
   take up most of the half of 4-5 nearest Bldg. 1. It will follow the design
   found in university lecture halls, with the rear higher than the front.
2) Half of the current 4-5 ceiling/attic floor will be removed to provide enough
   headroom for the auditorium.
3) A new stair tower will be built outside of Bldg. 3, between the bridges
   between 4-6/Bldg 5 and 3-5/Bldg 5. New exits into the stair tower will
   be provided from 4-5, 4-4 and 4-3.
4) The current stairway between 4-4 and 4-3 will be eliminated. The ramp on 4-4
   will be redone.
5) The current emergency exit on 4-3 will be eliminated. An (emergency?) exit
   will be provided from the new stair tower.
6) Some conference rooms will be provided behind the auditorium on 4-5. The
   floor level here will be about 2 1/2 feet higher than currently.
7) The stairs between 4-5 and 3-6 and 4-5 and 3-5 will be redone, and partially
   replaced with ramps.
8) A large skylight will be provided in part of the space between the auditorium
   and the new stairwell on 4-5.
9) The other half of 4-5 (nearest Walnut St.) will be renovated normally, with
   offices.

Comments? I hope this is done well, without taking too much character from the
Mill.

85.2it blew the ENET!!REGENT::MOZERH.C.C. ;-)Thu Mar 17 1988 15:076

    All I know is that a water pipe burst which not only took "down"
    the ENET to the rest of DEC, but also from some parts of the Mill
    to the other :-(... And it just came back up about 30 min. ago!!

85.3Sprinkler system still works...RAMBLR::MORONEYPeriod Three Implies ChaosThu Mar 17 1988 23:205
I heard they knocked a sprinkler head. True?

Not good to have a computer room right below...

85.4Water on the brainBETSY::WATSONNo_MadFri Mar 18 1988 09:1418
Yup. One of the workers doing the renovations on 4-5 knocked a sprinkler
head completely off, and it took them awhile to find the shut-off valve.
My sources tell me that even though the router to the Outside World was
virtually unaffected, the rest of the comm. computer room looked like
someone had thrown several buckets of water on the equipment (including the
gandalf switch) so they couldn't restore electrical power for several
hours.

NOW, they have one of those little red boxes hanging on the wall with the
roll of emergency plastic inside.. just in case.

re: having a computer room right below. Mike, remember when the intake
water line to the A/C in the 21-4 computer room burst, and it soaked
everything on 21-3 & 21-2? We thought *that* was major.

It's the Mill.

That was before my time, but I heard several stories about it. Plastic
sewer pipes for the water supply + water hammer from the A/C = major leak.

Took them a while before they caught on and replaced the plastic pipes with
copper ones.

    There were several serious water pipe breaks and roof leaking problems
    in 21 over the years. We had one pipe break on 21-3 which did
    significant damage to the f/s stock room on 21-1. We have had
    emergency plastic up here for a long time!

                I heard that the damage could have been MUCH worse if it
        hadn't been for one fast thinking worker that grabbed one of the
        firehoses and used it to route the water from the sprinkler head
        out one of the windows! (Sounds good anyway)
