| Umm, what do you want it to do?
Are you attempting to put the card catalog online? Is this for
librarian use or the general public?

| Would like to start by put all the card catalog online so that people
using the library can walk up to a terminal type in a subject or
author can get the location of the book(s). Then move to checking
out an in and mailist and etc etc etc.

83.3 | Tossing a few ideas around | PRAGMA::GRIFFIN | Dave Griffin | Tue Mar 01 1988 15:39 | 27 |
| The Digital Library Network has a nice system - I don't know if
it is proprietary, a 3rd party package, or some mixture.
There is a text retrieval system called BASIS (at one time the company
name was Battelle - I don't know if that still holds). BASIS's
main purpose in life is to lookup text. I don't know what the user
interface looks like and how well you can add other functions (like
the check-out capability).
Although you don't need the distributed aspects - though one could
offer it in the future, VAX VTX might make an excellent interface
tool and database. The text searching might require some additional
development, but a demonstration system could be very easily developed.
Linkages to a check-in/out application would quickly follow.
A 750 doesn't have a lot of horsepower, so this should be looked
at carefully. Lack of CPU speed must typically be made up by
either in-memory data structures or extra disk space for clever
access techniques. Are other people using this 750 at the same
time?
I presume the library has a cooperative arrangements (for lending)
with other libraries in the area. Is there software this system
has to interact with?

83.4 | MORE ON LIBRARY | LDP::FILZ | | Thu Mar 03 1988 14:24 | 6 |
| YES DURING THE DAY OTHER PEOPLE IN THE TOWN HALL WILL BE USING THE
SYSTEM AT NIGHT NOT TO MANY PEOPLE. THE LIBRARY IS PART OF THE CO-OP
AND IS LOOKING AT SOFTWARE ALSO.
NO THE SYSTEM DOES NOT HAVE TO TALK TO OTHER MACHINES THANK GOD.

| You really should consider the possibility of Maynard joinming one
of the regional Library networks. The Town of Acton just voted
the money to fund the Acton Memorial Library joining the Minuteman
network. Minuteman is made up of several towns; Concord, Sudbury,
Bedford, etc. Eventaully all of the catalog will be on-line and
patrons will be able to access ten times as many titles through
inter-Library loan.
I would strongly suggest that you look into what other Libraries
in the area are doing so that if the opportutnity arises to join
a compatible network, they won't have wasted all that input.

| Maynard is already part of the Minuteman network. What I was looking
for is to take care of the local needs of the library.

| Speaking solely as a Maynard resident, and not a DEC employee:
Purchase a couple of Apple Macintosh's with HyperCard and you can
have a library application up inside of a few days.
It might be simplistic, but that has it's benefits too.
If you want a prototype, just ask and I'll build one!
