[1mPolice Hope to Arraign Suspect Shot While Allegedly Resisting[m
Arrest
MAYNARD, Mass. (AP) - An arraignment was scheduled for today for
a 31-year-old Maynard man who was shot by police after he allegedly
drew a shotgun when they tried to arrest him on attempted rape and
other charges.
Police Chief Arner Tibbetts said he hoped Carlos Soto would be
well enough to be arraigned from his hospital bed.
Soto was listed in stable condition Monday night with bullet
wounds in his right hip and left forearm at the University of
Masachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, said nursing supervisor
Ursula Shea.
A Concord District Court judge had approved a warrant for Soto's
arrest Monday on charges of assault with intent to rape, assault
and battery and breaking and entering, Tibbetts said.
The chief would not give details on what led to the charges but
said the incident occurred early in the morning.
Police went to arrest Soto after a caller told them of his

whereabouts, Tibbetts said.
The chief said Officer David Goguen was the first one at the
scene. He said Goguen pulled up to Soto's van and asked the suspect
to step out and show his identification.
Soto stepped out of the van, pulled out a shotgun, and began
struggling with Goguen, who drew his service revolver, Tibbetts
said. Meanwhile, back-up officers Sgt. Patrick Currin and Officer
John Callahan arrived at the scene.
During the struggle between Goguen and the suspect, Soto's
shotgun went off and the officer stepped away, the chief said.
``The suspect then leveled the shotgun toward the officers, and
the officers responded by firing their service weapons at the
suspect, who fell down a light grade,'' Tibbetts said.
No officers were injured, he said.
``At this point, I feel that the officers acted properly,''
Tibbetts said.
After the incident, Soto was charged with assault with intent to
murder, assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a firearm
without a license, Tibbitts said.
Tibbetts said police would investigate the shooting.

| This happened on Dawn Rd., just off of Powder Mill Road. Soto lived
across from the Mill, and worked in the Mill cafeteria.

53.3 | Disturbing, but not paralyzing | SONATA::HICKOX | The walk of life | Thu Mar 12 1987 17:04 | 5 |
| Yes, it is disturbing, but I don't think it warrants getting upset
about. It can happen anywhere, anytime even in the little towns,
but then again Maynard is really not a little town anymore.
I think there's more to this incident than meets the eye anyway.
