263.1 | Server Works doesn't support Old WS's | PCBUOA::BRACKEN | | Tue Apr 29 1997 11:18 | 3 |
| The reason this does not work is because there is no support for
DEC3000 and 2000 series of workstations, which
haven't been sold externally for 3 year.

| Can I ask why? We have not decommited support for any alpha systems?
|
263.3 | Trying to keep up with newer platforms | PCBUOA::BRACKEN | | Wed Apr 30 1997 09:37 | 4 |
| It's not that we have decomitted, we have always added new platforms
since the inception of Server Works without having the manpower to go
back to supporting legacy platforms. If we do it is in the Server
realm.

What MIB variable are you polling to learn the workstation model?
.0 posted values for sysObjectID, which doesn't map to models at all...
Thanks,
Mike

263.5 | You can override us! | PCBUOA::TAGARIELLOB | | Mon May 12 1997 19:35 | 33 |

The sysDescr is used in the case of VMS and Digital Unix.
The decision was made that ServerWORKS should ONLY DISCOVER SERVERS!
THIS IS A PRODUCT MANAGEMENT DECISION, NOT A TECHNICAL ONE.
We have been through this many times, one day it is in the next day
it is out.
Kami Ajgaonkar is in charge of our Alpha funding, and made this decision.
If you wish this decision changed, please contact him ASAP.
Any user can make the change in the object group for a server.digital.
Select the menu
Tools->Object Types...
Push the "object descriptor..." button
Use the Object Type selector, find server.digital.
Hit add
Use Object Type selector again, server.digital
add in the sysDescr field DECM4000 or whatever you want.
When discovery finds this string in the sysdesc it will
override the regular mechanism.

| Thanks for the information.
I really just wanted to make sure you weren't making assumptions
about sysObjectID values.
