518.1 | Possible a LAPB link is non-existent or not enabled | OZROCK::HARTWIG | Arthur Hartwig, TaN Engineering-Australia | Sat May 17 1997 00:35 | 26 |
| The modem connect line does NOT have DTR asserted; it probably doesn't have an
active client. The cable has been detected a number of times; perhaps the modem
connect line has been enabled/disabled a few times; perhaps other entities have
been disabled also.
Work methodically up the stack:
1) Have you got a LAPB link using the particular modem connect line?
Is the LAPB link enabled?
2) Does the LAPB link have a X25 PROTOCOL DTE using it? Is the X25 PROTOCOL DTE
enabled?
If you answered NO to any of the above questions then your observation is
explained.
You can use the NCL commands 'show modem connect data port * all' and 'show lapb
port * all' to check associations between the named entity and its user (if
there is a user).
There is a trouble shooting guide for X.25; have you used it?
Are there any other events written to the operator log. In particular, the DNSES
is a firmware device; are there messages about the firmware loading or dumping?
(There should be a firmware load for each DNSES as the system starts; but no
more.)

Yes, state is on - initializing

Yes, state is unsynchronised

Below is the output of the commands you listed above and "show lapb link * all"
and "show x25 prot dte * all". Sorry for the lengthy note, but I hope this may
provide a clue to the problem.
>There is a trouble shooting guide for X.25; have you used it?
Is there an on-line pointer to this document? I get involved with setting up
X.25 once every 12-15 months and after it is setup it just runs, so I am kind
of rusty in this area...
>Are there any other events written to the operator log. In particular, the DNSES
>is a firmware device; are there messages about the firmware loading or dumping?
>(There should be a firmware load for each DNSES as the system starts; but no

No, I don't see any other errors reported.

| The X.25 trouble shooting guide is part of the doc kit on the
consolidated docs CD-ROM.
It looks as if you have all the necessary entities enabled. I should
have asked for a display of all the modem connect line attributes at
the same time.
You should have DTR asserted on the modem connect line and the modem
should recognise that DTR is asserted. (If the latter is not true you
probabl have a cable problem.) I also observed that one of your LAPB
links had seen 7 CRC errors. This number shouldn't change very much.
But if 7 CRC errors have been seen that means some incoming frames have
been observed - the modem has presented you something, even if not very
useful.
I suggest you also record a modem connect line trace - it appears there
is at least some instance of the modem presenting you something and
that suggests that at some stage the modem did see DTR from your
system.
Are you sure the LAPB sequence modulus should be 128? (Its a little
uncommmon and not particularly useful with a window size of 7.) If
there is a LAPB sequence modulus mismatch then LAPB won't start. If
someone then panics and starts pulling cables apart, changines entity
states and looking at entity attributes in an unstructured way then the
returned values won't necessarily be helpful.
I suggest you start at the bottom layer and work up; The modem connect
line should have DTR asserted and RTS asserted. If not, make sure the
cable is connected to the modem, the modem is powered on.
If DTR is not asserted check the LAPB link using this line is
enabled and initialising; if not check the x25 protocol DTE is enabled.

| Thanks for the help Arthur. This problem has been resolved.
1) The sequence modulus was changed from 128 to 8.
2) The X.25 provider changed his DSU's to enable the V.35 interface
instead of the RS232 interface.
DTR really was being asserted at particular times... the ncl snapshot
he captured in an earlier workunit happened to be when both modem
connect lines had DTR "not asserted".
