1245.1 | reminds me of "Duel" | EDSCLU::JAYAKUMAR | | Mon May 05 1997 12:16 | 8 |
| I have only seen the trailers, ads and other print reviews. From what I have
seen, this movie reminds me of a Speilberg movie: Duel. That one is set on
a remote highway in the West, wherein an 18 wheeler truck, stalks a guy in car
for no apparent reason. There is hardly any conversation and we never get to
see who is the stalker in the truck. Very gripping, and I hope "Breakdown"
lives upto its trailers.

1245.2 | not bad | CTHU26::S_BURRIDGE | | Mon May 05 1997 15:13 | 25 |
| I saw this last night. I'd say it lived up to its trailers. (I've
never seen "Duel.")
Russell is well cast as an ordinary middle class guy from
Massachusetts, moving with his wife to San Diego in their brand-new,
unpaid-for, fancy red Jeep. Somewhere in the southwestern desert the
Jeep breaks down, and the wife accepts an offer from a passing trucker
of a drive down the road to phone for a tow truck. The tow truck doesn't
arrive. Russell gets the Jeep going and heads down the road, only to find
that nobody, including the trucker, will admit to having seen his wife.
Increasingly frantic, Russell tries to find his wife.
Eventually the bad men responsible show themselves, and Russell spends the
second half of the movie in intense conflict with them. There are
several car chases and shootings.
The movie moves along very fast. The plot's not very credible, the
characterization is pretty sketchy, and I suspect I won't remember much
about the movie in a couple of weeks. However, it is generally well
done. Not just Russell, but most of the roles seem well cast and
capably acted. The appealing noir-ish setup is strung out just long
enough. The tension is considerable, but didn't keep me from grinning
at the outrageousness of some of the situations.

| I rate this movie as a must see. Absolutely intense. Make sure you
catch this one in the theatre (or I guess a $10k home entertainment
system would work).

1245.4 | Didn't quite do it for me | TNPUBS::NAZZARO | UMass in 1998 - Final Four! | Fri May 16 1997 12:13 | 8 |
| I must admit to being a bit disappointed by this movie, and I can't
really put my finger on why. The bad guys were certainly bad enough.
The plot was stupid enough to be scoffed at but not so outrageous that
you could dismiss it out of hand. Kurt Russell was appropriately
distraught. But for me it all didn't come together. I never bought
into the movie. My wife, on the other hand, really liked it a lot.

1245.5 | Not many cheesey one liners as one would expect. | POLAR::TYSICK | Prying Open my Third Eye | Mon May 26 1997 09:57 | 11 |
| I liked it.
Great action, and those kinda parts where you see the bad guy's
getting what they deserve and it puts a huge smile on your face.
Story was feasible. I mean c'mon, I'm sure there are Red Necks out
there who have thought of this. [^;=
Lots of fun. 3.5 outta 5

1245.6 | Where have all the good "B" movies gone? | WONDER::REILLY | Sean Reilly, Alpha Servers, DTN 223-4375 | Tue May 27 1997 12:11 | 23 |

Stupid.
I didn't have "great" expectations for this movie. All I wanted was
a fun action/suspense deal. Someobody mentioned "Duel." Something
along those lines or "Hitcher" was all I was looking for, really.
But another disappointment. I haven't seen one good movie since "Fargo."
Hollywood is just cranking out movies left and right nowadays, and
this is another example of mailing one in.
I'm only willing to suspend my disbelief so far, even for a "B" movie.
The plot for this was just silly, and executed poorly on top of that.
There were no credible reasons for most of the actions taken, and no
discernible motives for anybody's behavior. Lots of dumb plot set-ups
and "explanations" just insulted the audience.
And you saw the all the chase scenes in the trailer - don't expect any
more.
The bright spot? The acting was pretty good.
