What a waste of a Sunday morning. We hurried out to the 11:15 AM showing to see this, expecting that it would play to packed theaters later this week. We should have waited for the release on tape. But it should be near the bottom of your list. I'm quite willing to suspend my disbelief and accept some holes in a movie. But this was more than I could take. The movie "borrows" a lot of appearance and characters from the Ewoks, and "Dark Crystal". That, in and of itself, is not troubling. But with such flagrant "borrowing" one would expect similar quality. That's not the case. The "plot" has gaping holes. It seems to be a mish-mash of random scenes with little in the way of plot to connect them. Yes, there's some sort of overall plot, but it's completely lost in the missing details. Things happen, people appear, magic takes place, with not even the thinnest explanation. I kept getting lost time after time. I hate to use the words acting and dialogue in the same sentence wrt this movie. The action scenes were blurry and not in focus. And they were mediocre at best. At this point I've grown tired of describing this boring movie. To be fair, there was one scene that was quite captivating. It takes place in a kitchen, and is an absolutely amazing demonstration of flamboyant cooking and acrobatics.

I can tell you haven't seen the second Power Rangers movie if you thought this was so dreadful. But I did find myself muttering "use the force, Ryan" and "beware the dark side" a couple times -- yes, the dialogue ripoffs were that blatant. And I agree, more of the kitchen scenes would have been good (though the first one came at us without any preparation, which disoriented me). But I've got to give these guys credit for getting the movie made: 4 medical doctors, brothers, with no movie background, mounting a major production in Beijing, of all places. Too bad there was no hint of the exotic location; it was all shot on a sound stage (except for the Vancouver scenes). |
