1241.0. "The Saint" by TUXEDO::HASBROUCK () Thu Apr 24 1997 18:15

Val Klimmer in a movie-version of the T.V. series about a virtuous thief.
This is a light hearted espionage flic. The film is poorly rated, because
the plot is so absurd and inconsistent. This sort of film usually doesn't add
up, but this particular one is really senseless. It's as if the director was
trying to create the impression of a child's day-dream during class.
If you like this, then the film's next worst failing is that at 2 hours, it's
too long. The film works inspite of itself - there's a charming and funny
performance by Val Klimmer, a varied and exotic soundtrack, and wonderful
photography of Moscow.

Elizabeth Shue is the female side-kick. There's this odd connection
to her other major film, "Leaving Las Vegas". In both films, Shue is
beset by Russian gangsters in leather jackets. I hope Shue doesn't get
type-cast in this role.

Re .0

I think you'll find its "Kilmer" and not "Klimmer" ! ;^)

That aside, I'm looking forward to seeing it. It never hurts to get a new
perspective on an old favourite. And anything with Elizabeth Shue in it is OK in
my books!

I enjoyed it, although it bears no resemblance to the book series by
Leslie Charteris (except in the title character's name and profession.)

Not a great movie, but not a horrible one...

I haven't seen it, but...

The Sunday Globe lists a table of current movies and a one character
review (star/okay/bomb) of the movie from each of a dozen or so media
outlets across the country. The Saint had a bomb from every outlet
except perhaps the Hollywood Reporter.

There's probably something to be said for such consensus.

I saw this too and was surprised. It's not that bad, and I think
many people would enjoy it. I gave it **'s, because the plot was
extremely dumb. But it was fun anyhow.

When I called Volvo Service yesterday, their hold message boasted of
how the new model Volvo is featured in the movie "The Saint". Hope they
didn't spend too much for that endorsement...
