1238.0. "Vertigo (1958)" by DECC::SULLIVAN (Jeff Sullivan) Mon Apr 21 1997 20:49
A "Special Edition" restoration of Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" is out and is a
must-see for filmbuffs. It is available on video in widescreen format or on as a
70mm print with THX sound in selected theaters. I rented the video and really
enjoyed it. I think the scenery and colors would be very impressive on the big
screeen. The musical score I found a little distracting, so it could be better
or worse in the theater.
On the video, before the film starts, they run a trailer for the restored film
followed by the original trailer. The movie runs 2:09 and the last half moves
along faster than the first. At the end, there is a 20 minute or so, short
documentary on the making of the movie and the $1 million restoration project.
This I found fascinating...
It stars James Stewart (John "Scottie" Ferguson), Kim Novak (Madeleine
Elster/Judy Barton) and Barbara Bel Geddes (Marjorie "Midge" Wood). Although I
think Psycho is more suspenseful, this is considered by many to be Hitch's best
work. The scenery and the camerawork was stunning. It would be a shame to see
this in the modified (not wodescreen) format.

BTW, I missed the Hitchcock cameo.

The other format will stop working at the next weekly update.
