1232.0. "Muppet's Treasure Island" by UFP::BOBB (Janet Bobb dtn:339-5755) Mon Mar 31 1997 16:02

Ok - I searched on Title= and when back as far as early 1994 - didn't
see an entry but if there is one - sorry and feel free to move this.

Over the weekend saw the Muppets Treasure Island. It is probably one
of the better Muppet movies, along the lines of a Muppet Christmas
Carol. They take the story and do it the muppet way. Muppet regulars
all show up - Kermit, Miss Piggy, gonzo, Rizzo the rat, Fozzi, the
professer/beaker, the band, swedish chef - along with many others
you'll recognize. Humans - tim curry as long john silver (does a GREAT
job) and Jim Hawkins is played by a young actor who is "introduced"
(but can't remember his name). Bar owner is Jennifer ...something, from
the british sitcom Absolutely Fabulous. Billy Connelly is a drunken
sailer with a part in the very beginning.

You probably have to watch it multiple times to catch all the jokes and
play on words. I know we backed it up to replay lines and were asking
    each other about certain items.

Funny, family movie. some history with the muppets is a definate since
some of the jokes are muppet insider stuff. More "classic" muppet
players then any of the newer ones from the recent tv show.

And what else has billy connelly been in? He was so familar I know I've
seen him elsewhere and not just the comedy channel because we don't
have cable and only see that when we're visiting other people.

story line after form feed, mild spoilers

General story - Young boy orphan, Jim Hawkins, works in English tavern
hating his life, wishing for adventure. His two co workers are Gonzo
and Rizzo the Rat. Bar is owned by stereotype fat, ugly (black teeth
included) mean woman. A drunken sot of a customer, Billy Bones (played
by Billy connelly) tells tall tales of a buried treasure and murdered
crew. Later that night Billy receives a death threat from his former
crew and gives Jim the treasure map. right on cue the pirate crew shows
up, threatens everyone and end up burning down the inn. All main
characters escape and make their way to hire a ship and hunt for gold.
They end up convincing the "slow-witted" son (how the butler introduces
him) of a wealthy ship builder (played by Fozzi) and he provides the
ship. Off they go on the ship, not knowing that other than the captain
(Kermit), the first mate (Sam - american eagle?) and a few others
(Beaker, professor), the rest of the crew are pirates, hired by the
cook (tim curry) who is actually Long John Silver. The cook befriends
Jim, but then takes over the ship when they arrive at the treasure
island and kidnapps Jim. Good guys attempt rescue and are captured by
natives - the wild boars - who's head goddess just happens to be Miss
Piggy and the captain's long lost girlfriend. General antics occur
from this point forward with the expected Muppet ending - good guys win
and bad guys lose without lots of bloodshed.

I gave this to my 6-year-old nephews last fall, & watched it with them
a couple of times. They enjoyed it, and so did I. I read the R.L.
Stevenson novel when I was quite young, and I enjoyed the fact that
many of the scenes remained recognizable, though Muppeted-up -- for
example, Jim in the apple barrel. I liked the songs and many of the
jokes, and thought Connolly and Curry in particular were well cast.
I haven't seen other Muppet movies, and was suprised by the quality of
    this one.

>> And what else has billy connelly been in?

I believe he was in the TV sitcom "Head of the Class" as the teacher who
replaced Howard Hessman (sp?) toward the end of the show's run. Perhaps
that's what you remember him from.

THANK YOU! Yes! I used to watch that show.

It's been driving me nuts! I could partially see him in my mind's eye
in a tv show setting and have been going through all the recent shows
and not having any luck. Wouldn't have thought to go back that far.

and I never remember where the website it to check these things!

What the previous note said about staying with the plot and recognizing
scenes. For the Muppets christmas carol they did the same thing. They
stay pretty close to the story, but with their own adaptions to include
muppet characters. I haven't read Treasure Island in so long I couldn't
tell you how much it strayed from the story. For some reason an
adaptation of a story done this way bothers me much less (and sometimes
seem more true to the story) then something like the recent Hallmark
20,000 Leagues under the Sea rendition (on TV). Maybe because you don't
expect anything with muppets to stay with the story, but would hope a
serious remake would. Oh well, different topic/different notes file.

I'd like to see more Muppet re-tellings of stories. I like these better
then their "original" stories (except for the first muppet movie which
    still ranks high up there).

If you're a Muppet fan, check out "Muppet Classic Theatre"
It does famous short stories (3 little pigs, boy who cried wolf, etc)
with a funny Muppet twist. Lots of good lines like:

Wolf: You're supposed to say "Not by the hair of my chinny-chin-chin
Ms Piggy: Are you implying I have facial hair? Womp

Anyway, my kids like it too. :-)

We got this movie for our 2-year-old for Christmas, and she has never
let me watch -- uh, I mean, she has never wanted to watch it beyond the
first 1/3 or so. Not that she doesn't like the Muppets -- she loves
them -- but it takes her a while to warm up to something new. (btw, she
highly recommends the Muppet Classic Theater video mentioned a few
    replies back).

I'll probably have to watch MTI sometime while she's napping, just for
    quality control, you understand.

The drunken sailor at the beginning (Connelly?) is also the voice of
one of the sailors in John Smith's crew in Pocohantas.
