1223.0. "Lost Highway" by ASDG::MCNAMARA (strange visitor......) Sat Mar 01 1997 09:25

OK, this is a David Lynch movie starring Bill Pullman, Patricia
Arquette, Balthizar Getty (sp?), Richard Loggia, and cameos by
Gary Bussey and Richard Pryor. Verrrry typical David Lynch-esque
flick, lots and lots of visual imagery, great cinematography,
unbelievable soundtrack (the soundtrack is said to be a major part
of this movie). Plot is fairly thin, and I have not seen it yet,
as it won't be playing outside of the major Cities (Boston, New York,
etc) until March 7th, tho it's playing now in those larger Cities.

Reviews say it's an outstanding erotic-thriller, "seriously scary"
(Rolling Stone)...if you liked any of Lynch's other works ("Twin
Peaks", "Blue Velvet", et al), you'l like this one. Lynch states
that "it's not a movie for everyone", which sounds to me like
I'll fall in love with it.

Sorry for the lack of plot info, but after I see it (next Friday),
    I'll post more info.

    Enjoy!

I believe I saw an ad for this last night and if it's the
same film it would appear to also star Robert Blake (yes,
the little rascal, Baretta, and favorite guest on Tom
	Snyders Late Late Show).

At least I hope he has more than a cameo!

....Yes, that's correct..sorry I did not mention Messieur Blake.
He plays a character that more-or-less symbolizes "Death"
('cuz everytime he shows up, someone dies....)

    Marvelous!

really lokking forward to this one, and I can't say I've felt this
way about a film for a while.

In the battle between my two favorite bizarro directors, both of whom
have movies coming out soon, I'm thinking David Cronenberg and "Crash"
is going to edge out Lynch and "Lost Highway." But its nice to have
them both putting out something new... finally!

...ya, but the Herald gave it *** 1/2 stars!

    Here's some of that review:

"...The film, which Lynch calls 'a 21st-Century noir', has all the
earmarks of a drug-induced fever dream...Lynch is more concerned
with inducing altered states in his viewers that he is telling
a story...'Lost Highway' becomes an intoxicating mix of dread, menance,
longing, and horror...a darkly lyrical expression of Lynch's sexual
fantasies...you either go along for the ride or take the first exit".

    cool........

"Eraserhead" and "Elephant Man" were so good. Well, so were
the first 3 episodes of Twin Peaks. I wish he'd get out of this
"Blue Velvet" mode. Sounds like this movie mimics that.

P.S. I won't even mention a guilty pleasure of mine is tht
          I actually like "Dune."

Well I had to add this review since it seems no one got to see it
    before it left the theaters....

We saw it last week in Harvard Sq.

Now me and my date both like Lynch and we knew the cast and we knew
    the soundtrack was really good.

but lets just say after 15minutes of the strangeness not ever ending,
you geta little bored. Then we started mocking the lynch type things in the
movie. The funny thing is that half the theater were laughing/mocking
the same silly lynchish scenes ..it was so bizarre & useless that it
began to be kinda funny. But the story is so complicated and doesn't
come together very well and ends leaving you with that feeling that you
just lost 2 1/2 of your life....

1223.12Just the opposite...I LOVED it!!ASDG::MCNAMARAstrange visitor......Mon Apr 07 1997 08:4818
...I just saw it (finally!) in Maynard, @ The Fine Arts...my wife and
I were 1/3 of the people there (6 in all).....I had just the opposite
reaction, this movie was supposed to be totally abstract....since
you're a fan of Lynch's other works, you must realize how he loves
mysteries and hates when the mystery is solved...obviously Lynch
took this over-the-edge, but the film left me with many unanswered
questions, and a total feeling of being lost in someone else's
    nightmare.....

to each his own, I guess......loved it, can't wait until the video
    comes out.....

    **** out of *****

    FWIW....

Glad you cleared that up; we would have been concerned if you and your
wife were, say, 1/3 of the 11 people there.... ;-)
