At the risk of inciting our fine moderators to create a new topic--
I've never seen Angels in the Outfield, which I believe is a remake of
a movie by the same name from the 1950's. But I would question the
basic premise (as far as it comes out in the previews), which is that
supernatural beings come down from heaven to help a baseball team win,
in response to a boy's prayers. It invalidates a basic premise of
sportsmanship, which is that the playing field should be level between
the competitors. We in Baltimore are still rankled by the 12-year-old
Yankee fan who interfered with a key play in last week's playoffs;
imagine how the Angels' opponents would feel when repeated intervention
by divine beings cause them to lose to a team whose players have, in
the words of the previews, no talent.
It's a subtle point, but key. Even as we might tell our kids during a
shoot-em-up movie that the shootees are people too, I would have to
accompany this movie with a lecture to my kids that what was being done
for the Angels isn't really sportsmanlike. If my conjectures are
well-founded--can someone who saw the movie comment?
Thanks,
Jim B.
