| I was apalled when I heard that Madonna was getting the lead part in this
movie. I love the work of Rice/Webber, I love the theatre. Giving the part
to a pop star like Madonna whom I thought to be incapable of decent singing
astonished me - it was to me an obvious case of Madonna getting the part
because she was a big name, rather than talent.
So, I was very surprised and pleased when I a colleague lent me a CD of the
soundtrack. It was very good, and Madonna was even pretty good. So tonight
we went to see the film.
I was sorely disappointed. Madonna's arm gestures were really irritating, and
she didn't really come over as being able to dance at all. She was meant to
be fifteen at the start of the film (from memory); she never looked a day
under thirty.
I know that the production crew only got one shot at the Casa Rosada scenes,
but why did they let the crowd wave the same banners for "Don't Cry For Me..."
and "I want to tell the people", two scenes separated by...a decade? more?
Sorry, I didn't expect Madonna to be able to sing, I did expect her to be able
to move. She sang well, but her moving seemed really wooden.
regards,
//alan

| I saw this movie last weekend and was disappointed. A friend of mine
told me that is was very true to the play, but when it was done I
couldn't figure out if I liked it. Modona was fair in her role, but I
don't think that the play in a movie form worked. I'm not going to say
what happens at the end but I found myself not careing!
Oh well... ** out of *****

| Saw a TV interview with Madonna (can't remember what show) where she
talked about going to a voice/singing coach in order to prepare for
this movie. she herself made the comment that she'd never had any voice
training before this - but needed it for this role.
haven't seen the movie yet, but have heard the soundtrack. Like the
musuc (but have liked it since it was first released as a play).
there's also another cd out with "alternate" soundtracks. As far as I
could tell, the entire CD is 6 or so renditions of "don't cry for me"
all with different beats, some wording changed, etc. the one they were
playing in the music stay sounded to me like a disco version - pretty
bad - imho!

| Joyce Kilhawick of WBZ TV panned the movie mostly because she didn't like
Madonna's performance from a Broadway show biz point of view. I'm sure lots of
people who are Broadway musical fans 1st and drama fans or history buffs 2nd
will feel this way since they tend to prefer the spectacular type of singer
with more stage presence and big voice.
In the movie I think it works better this way since Evita herself was not a
spectacular singer or actor, more a borderline actor who relied on timing and
wits to win over a crowd rather than show biz charisma.
Madonna may not have duplicated the Broadway performance but she did do a
1st rate job of portraying the character of Evita Peron.
