1159.1 | Pee Wee makes a cameo as well...look hard for him | POLAR::RENAUDP | short on O2 once too often! | Thu Aug 29 1996 00:29 | 16 |
| I took my 7 year old to see this today (last blowout day prior to
returning to school) and I found it really enjoyable.
The story is adapted from the Roald Dahl book of the same name, with
Danny Devito starring and directing. Rhea Pearlman is also in it, cast
as his wife.(Art imitates life)
The story is about a little girl born to terrible parents who don't
want her. She is a different sort of child with some pretty special
powers.
It was really quite amusing, a laugh or too for the adults, and was
quite well made. I would suggest it to any parents looking for a good
film to enjoy with the munchkins.

1159.2 | Decent flick... | ODIXIE::LOWER | What fools these mortals be! | Thu Aug 29 1996 01:55 | 15 |
| I enjoyed "Matilda" very much. My five-year-old got pretty bored
during the second act (which, admittedly, drags) but he thoroughly
enjoyed the third.
It's strictly a kiddie-flick with lots of good morals about the
importance of reading and the evils of television and cheating in
business.
If you need somewhere to take the kids (5-12), this would make a very
good matinee. Don't pay full price, though, it's not THAT good. You
might even want to wait for it to come to a dollar theater if there is
one in your area.

| Oh, I forgot to mention, Paul Reubens makes an appearance as an
undercover FBI agent investigating DeVito...
Funny stuff!

| We enjoyed this more than Harriet the Spy. I has particularly happy to
see Paul Reubens and Tracy Walter as the FBI agents. A terrific pair.
The style was marvelous. Rhea Perlman drinks Bud out of a can with a
straw. At one point dinner is a slice of ham topped with a slice of
canned pineapple, with a bright red marashino cherry in the middle.
Which they're eating on little TV trays. And DeVito and Perlman's
wardrobes, ah, to die for.
It did drag in the middle. The plot should have been tightened up.
They spent way too much time on Miss Kreplach (already forgot her
name), esp the interminable scene in the house trying to escape. They
could have done more with the FBI guys instead.
And Miss Honey gets the Teri Hatcher anorexic of the year award. She
looked ghastly, what a pity.

| My daughter (age 11.5) loved it; I give it a marginal thumbs-up because
I thought it was a little heavyhanded on the dark, ugly stuff; the
extreme wideangle lens got old fast, too. I wouldn't take rugrats
under age 7, but obviously YMMV. DeVito and Perlman were hilarious, as
were the costumes and the set decoration. When it's good, it's very
very good; when it's horrid it seems interminable (the chocolate cake
scene, for instance)!
I agree with the Miss Honey Anorexia award.
