1141.0. "The Basketball Diaries" by BUSY::SLAB (Candy'O, I need you ...) Mon Jul 29 1996 12:54

Let me start by saying that if you're looking to watch a
really good basketball movie, this isn't it. It's a really
good movie, but basketball isn't exactly the featured act-
    	ivity.

This could have just as easily been named "A Partial Jim
Carroll Autobiography", since it's based on a small segment
of the poet/musician's life when he got hooked on drugs.

Jim has a cameo, and if you know his voice you'll spot him
    	right away.

I rather liked this movie when I saw it, but then again, I like
character studies and angst and all that "drama" stuff. Definitely not
a glamorous role for Leonard DiCaprio but I thought he did a great job.
For such a young guy, he acts very well in roles requiring a
non-traditional "young guy" role (see also "What's Eating Gilbert
    Grape?" -- another good movie).

With regards to note .0, it wasn't supposed to be a basketball movie.
Basketball was just a peripheral issue (the protagonists of the movie
are all on or affiliated with a high school basketball team).

For those who don't know what the movie is about, it's essentially one
young man's decline and fall into the face of heroin addiction. It's
not a very upbeat movie, but it's not utterly morose, either.

    ***.5 out of ****

Well, I didn't say it was supposed to be a basketball movie,
I said that you'll be disappointed if you watch it thinking
it is. I don't even like basketball. 8^)

Kinda long. And not really much of a plot.
