I am opening up a note for FLED.. I saw the premiere here in
Atlanta on Sat night. It stars Lawrence Fishburne and Stephan
Baldwin and Selma Hayek. I dont want to give the plot away
without spoilers, so briefly, it is about two guys who get
to escape prison and then are running from different groups
of people. There are plenty of action scenes and the characters
interact real well together. It is a bit violent, i.e. shooting
and beating up, but a GOOD action film. The plot twists enough
to prevent you from getting bored. What made it real fun for
me is that it was filmed here in Atlanta. The landmarks that
you get to see are great. Atlanta does not get too many films
that are based here. It is opening in time for the Olympics
I do recommend it. *** out of ****.

p.s. Having been to my first, and probably only, movie premiere,
it was wonderful to have the actual stars, directors, producers,
etc in the audience with you, but it did also give a different
atmosphere than what you would find normally.

Out of curiousity, what sort of atmosphere is that?

People were just clapping and cheering during the introductions of
everyone on the screen. Same at the end of the movie. Also I think
there were greater reactions to things. Also, it was fun just watching
everyone arrive. Also, I dont think anyone dared to get up and go
to the bathroom!

Well, I kinda liked it. Actually, I liked some of the characters, the
plot was just sort of half-hearted excuse to get them together. I find
Stephen Baldwin aesthetically pleasing and Laurence Fishburne seemed to
be enjoying himself. They played off of each other well (it's a buddy
movie) and there were some cute in-joke references to other movies,
including "What's Love Got to Do With It?" in which Fishburne played
Ike Turner.
Now, again, plot wise, it's kinda silly. Yet another "hacker steals
umpteen million bucks from big corporation which is a front for [insert
nemesis country of choice] Mafia and gets in trouble while non-hacker
buddy helps keep him alive". Baldwin is the hacker and I like the fact
that he spent a lot of his time not performing huge heroics, but
getting beat up. :) Well, liked it isn't the right word, but I found
it a departure from the non-actiony character suddenly becoming aces
with brute force and/or the use of firearms. Fishburne is the more
street-wise action dude. For the guys, Selma Hayek is there looking
pretty. And there's the presently requisite "stripping as an admirable
profession" girlfriend who takes her top off. I wasn't terribly
impressed with her stripping talents, but on the other hand, I prefer
my strippers male.
For motorcycle fans, there were some nice looking Ducatti's. I want
one.
Oh yeah, the movie. Anyway, Dodge (Baldwin) stole some money and now
the mob wants it back. Also, he has a DISK (don't they always) with
some valuable information the attorney general wants in order to put
the Mob Ringleader away for good. The Mob Ringleader, for all you
Dynasty fans, is played by the guy who did "Dex" Dexter, Joan Collins'
gravel-voiced boyfriend. (I can still hear her shriek "Dex!" in that
Joan Collins way :) He has an ace hitman trying to track the DISK
down so basically, everybody and their mother is after Dodge, who, with
Piper (Fishbourne) has escaped from a Georgia chain gang. Escaped to
Atlanta, that is.
The film concerns their efforts to stay alive and out of harm.
Like I said, nothing earth-shattering. But I kinda liked it anyway.
Neat title sequence -- if you remember "Passenger 57" (I liked that in
spite of itself, too), the same director did this. There was a nifty
title scene in "Passenger 57" that concerned negative images, this time
it's the aftermath of an explosion. A very bass-heavy score, too, by
the by.
Lots of violence, no sex to speak of (well, a little), some cussin' and
some half-naked ladies.
**.5 out of ****

The 'Mexican' girl (Selma Hayek?) is quite pretty but she only has a little role in this movie. Besides that there is nothing much. | |||||

This isn't a great flick, nor is it garbage. Pretty good action,
the odd funny "one liner" type jokes and OK acting. The story could
have used a little more imagination.
2.5 outta 5 (on video)
