1124.0. "Screamers" by CHEFS::HANDLEY_I (Per Ardua Ad Alcohol) Wed Jun 26 1996 07:50
Has anybody seen this movie?
It's released in the U.K. this Friday but I caught it when I was out in
Barbados earlier this month.
It's based on "second variety" by Phillip K. Dick and stars Peter
Weller (robocop) among other people I'd never seen before. The story
is set on a planet called sirius 6b where a new fuel called berynium
has been discovered. There are miners and scientists who work the
mines but when they discover lethal radiation being given off they shut
the mines down. The New Economic Block (the economic controllers on
earth) get a little stressed abouth this and a war ensues, which leads
to a splinter group being formed called the alliance. As the war
rages, nuclear bombing raids decimate the civilian population and lead
to the two factions slugging it out alone. To aid in their fight, the
Alliance (the good guys) develop little things called screamers which
live under the sand and attack anything with a pulse (except the good
guys who wear special armbands). Things happen and the screamers
become more powerful and self-aware and then it's on for young and old
with everyone fighting to save themselves.
I really enjoyed this movie and good perfromances were turned in from
the lead characters, especially Peter Weller. I'd be interested to
hear other opinions on this movie.
