1084.0. "Things To Do in Denver When You're Dead" by TRUCKS::BEATON_S (I Just Look Innocent) Mon May 20 1996 09:12

I went to see this movie over the weekend, and (4 wot' it's worth) I
think this is a brilliant movie.

For some strange reason this is only getting a showing in art-farty
cinema's in the UK.... So while the majority go off to see "Barb Wire" and
"Copycat" at the local mulit-plex, the remaining 10 people go off to
see "Things to do in Denver...".

And that's a real shame 'cos this is a brilliantly shot, cleverly told
black comedy that hardly anyone will take time out to go see.

It stars Andy Garcia, Gabrielle Anwar (schmoooookin') plus a good few
other actors I cannae' remember (the guy who played the friend of the
family and Sandra Bullock's confidante in "While You Were Sleeping"...
the guy who was the wacky professor in the "Back To The Future"
films... and Christopher Walken plays the part of the main hood....
Oh yes, I havnae' mentioned that it is a gangster movie.

Why this wasn't hyped (in the UK at any rate) to the hilt like "Se7en",
"Heat", etc., etc, I do not know... "Things to do..." is easily as good
if not better than these movies... Though I suppose if you disliked
these two movies that won't be any kind of a recommendation.

I ain't going to give away any of the plot... It is a rare thing these
days to go see a movie and have absolutely no idea what is going to
    happen...

(Aside: I for one, am fed up to the back teeth, seeing scenes from
movies eons before the acutal movie appears on the big screen. I can
never quite work out the point of watching a cliff hanger scene in a
movie, when in the back of your mind you know the hero of the story
will survive this particular incident, because you havnae seen the bit
where he and the leading lady get their kit off yet !)

HAs anybody else seen this movie, but just not felt like noting about
    it ?

More to the point can anyone list out other movies that Gabrielle Anwar
    has been in ?

I've fancied seeing this for a while. On your recommendation I might
just do that. Don't let me down....:^)

This is playing at the Multiplex in Basingstoke, which surprised me...

I'll be off to see it this week anyway.

I'm sure someone will come up with the filmography from IMDB. She was
in (note 39) "Scent of a Woman" and (note 349) "For Love or Money",
    LOOKING GOOD in both.

Gabrielle is cute. The acting was ok. There were some good scenes.
Other than that I thought the plot was weak. I just couldn't imagine
some of the characters doing what they did.

Thanks a few back for the film biography on Gabrielle Anwar.

Sheesh..... I have seen "Scent of a Woman" and I do not remember her
being in this movie.... Which just goes to show...... something !

On the subject of the arty-farty cinema bit... I made this statement on
how the film is being shown in the Southampton/Portsmouth area,
plus speaking to a couple of bods back up en Ecosse... Then I did the
    tabloidy thing... added 2 + 2 and made 63 !

Still think it's a good film though.

I saw this a few weeks back. It was OK. It had a few really good scenes but
unlike someone earlier I thought that the plot was rather predictable and
uninspired. There were several times when it was clear they were about to do a
"formula" subplot and those story lines came out about the way I expected.

There was some good acting and as I said some good scenes but this movie is
no Good Fellas.

  ** out of 5,
