How about giving us some more info, like at least "why"
you thought it was a pretty good movie (since what makes
a movie "good" is very subjective and hence is not very
useful in a discussion just by itself, especially when
we are talking about some of the movies Shawn thinks
is good :-).
And a short synopsis of the general story/plot line
is also useful for those of us who haven't just seen
the video, and have long forgotton the comercial trailers ...

If I didn't know any better, I'd think that was an insult.

| I thought "Dangerous Minds" was just stupid. A generic storyline,
recycled from about a million other films. It was unrealistic and
tedious. I wouldn't watch it again. In fact, I wish I hadn't seen it at
all. A waste of two hours.

1056.4 | True story - well done | BRAT::MONBLEAU | | Wed Apr 10 1996 13:56 | 31 |
| .3 recycled
This may appear recycled, except that it is based on a true story and
true character - in fact, you can see the real ex-marine Ms. Johnson on TV
adds right now pumping support for some public education programs.
she's very feminine and attractive - not some rough edged ex-marine -
so Michele Phieffer (sp?) may have been good casting afterall. I was a
little dubious at first, but she pulled it off well.
As to the movie, if we assume that it stuck fairly close to the facts,
then it's hard to criticize too heavily. Acting was OK, with the the
parts played by the students done very well.
I've probably seen most of this type of flick, starting with "To Sir
With Love" 30 years ago to "Stand and Deliver" to "Dangerous Minds" to
even the made for TV jobs like the story of that high school principal
in Claremont, N.H., (part played by Michael Tucker), and the story about
Joe ?????(with the baseball bat) in New Jersey.
While it is true that the message is always the same - it is positive
and bears repeating. The only problem is that the folks who need to
believe this message most are probably too busy oiling their hand guns
and/or just trying to survive to spend any time watching these
"you need to believe in yourself first" - pro-education movies.
Nevertheless, I do find them uplifting and catch myself hoping that
more teachers and parents and un-motivated students could apply the
lessons to their real lives.
My views anyway.

| I thought this movie was a waste of time....it was so unrealistic. I
don't care of if it was based on a true story. The movie didn't make
you care at all about the characters...I guess we were suppose to feel
bad when one of the characters got killed, but I don't believe they got
in deep enough to the students to really care about them. Also, the
giving of the candy....come on, it made them look like they were monkeys
and if they did good job they would be rewarded..
save the $2.50..don't rent this!!

1056.6 | For a rental, not a bad flick | TNPUBS::MARCO | | Mon Apr 22 1996 12:52 | 13 |
| I rented Dangerous Minds this weekend and was prepared to dislike it--it did not
get rave reviews when it came out in the movie houses. But I was very
pleasantly surprised and found myself getting caught up in the film and enjoying
it. Michelle Pfeiffer is engaging albeit a bit naive I think, or at least
depicted here. I would expect the kind of naivete displayed here to be more
typical of a new and young teacher rather than a new and "been around" awhile
teacher. I did find the story to be realistic and reflective of both the kind
of students portrayed and the attitudes and actions of principals and boards of
education or at least as told to me by my teacher brother and friends. I am
glad that I waited til I saw it as a rental--I suspect my enthusiasm would have
been tainted by paying $7.25 to see it.
