1034.0. ""The Last Strand" cinema in Clinton, MA" by POBOXA::DFIELD () Mon Feb 19 1996 12:21

After reading some of the comments about price etc.. in the note
1007 about the new "Luxury" cinema complex in Worcestor I thought
I would mention a little cinema in Clinton called "The Last Strand".

"The Last Strand" is a small one screen cinema located on High Street
in downtown Clinton. This is an old cinema with a lot of history
that had been closed down and boarded up for years. It was totally
renovated about a year ago and in most respects was restored to
it's orignal condition. The only significant change was that every
third seat or so was removed and small tables added in their place.
The cinema has a beer and wine license and also serves a variety
of food. When I first heard about this I had doubts about if the
beer and wine license would work out but they handle it well.

The prices are very reasonable for the food and tickets. When I was
there about a month or so ago the ticket prices were $4.00 each.
This was at night time, not a matinee.

Their movie selection strategy seems to be to get first run movies
about 2-3 weeks after they first open. They run an intresting mix
of main stream and lesser known movies.

All in all I would give it a definite thumbs up. It's inexpensive,
    comfortable, nostalgic and well managed.

Not necessarily 2-3 weeks after opening. We saw "Golden Eye"
on opening weekend, which surprised me.

The Strand is fun. Very clean, easy parking, good food, and a
tall beer to wash it down! The sound system was not the best,
but you can't really complain for the price.

Been there a couple of times. Nice place to see a movie, but I've
got to agree with the last reply; the sound system does leave a
lot to be desired. I had trouble both times understanding the
    soundtrack.

...having spent my childhood at the original Strand, I cannot wait
to go back to see a flick there....for example, I saw "Hard Days Night"
there in '65 (?)...believe it or not, my grandmother took me!
Also saw such other classics there as "Night of the Living Dead" ('68),
"Santa Claus vs. the Martians" (~ '66 or so...)

gotta there and relive them memories....

I used to go there when I was a kid also. I remember seeing a
disney flick or two and Earthquake, in senseround. :^)

We saw "Goldeneye" there too. The manager (well, the guy in charge
that night, anyway) told us that he was pretty much forced by the [film
distributor?] to show "Goldeneye" right away--and charge top dollar
for it. I don't know how the pressure was applied, or how often that
happens, but I didn't mind paying the going rate. And I don't remember
    any problems with the sound.

Besides having been recently renovated, The Last Strand is set apart
from The Elm in Millbury (another munch'n'watch) by NOT allowing
smoking (I'm 95% sure). Second hand smoke doesn't bother me but I know
it's an extreme hot button to many folks.

There are movie theatres that allow smoking?
Surely not in the auditorium, but even in the lobby?

Yup, last time I was at the Elm (probably a year ago; we saw "IQ")
there was a smoking section *in the auditorium*. I think they were
    relegated to the side sections.

Dead Man Walking is playing this week. I think the show
generally (the Bond flick was an exception) changes on
Friday; shows during the week start at 7:30 (not sure about
weekends -- there are matinees as well as the evening show).
