1004.0. "Stormy Weather" by NETCAD::SHERMAN (Steve NETCAD::Sherman DTN 226-6992, LKG2-A/R05 pole AA2) Wed Jan 03 1996 09:00
Didn't see a note on this, so I thought I'd comment just for kicks.
Recently, my wife and I rented Stormy Weather, an old classic featuring
Lena Horne, Cab Callaway, the Nicolas Brothers and more. (Please
forgive spelling errors.) We both really like Lena Horne, having
gotten to see her live show in Texas about ten years ago. And, she was
fabulous in this movie. Cab Callaway and the others were also
spectacular. But, the Nicolas brothers did an absolutely breathtaking
performance. When we saw them in the credits we knew what to expect
and were delighted with the result. I'm no judge of dancing (and not
much of a fan), but their dance routine is now my all time favorite dance
routine. It is simply amazing and is toward the end of the movie.
The story, what little there is of it, is just a framework for
showcasing the talent. Frankly, the story and much of the acting just
isn't done well. But, that's not why anyone would want to see it. There
is some stereotyping that made us uncomfortable. But, the raw talent and
charm of many of the players seems to transcend all stereotyping, in my
opinion.
