956.0. "Assassins" by EVMS::MARION (So many fish ...) Mon Oct 16 1995 11:10

    Just went to see the latest Stallone movie, "Assassins", this weekend.
    Also starring Antonio Banderas. A pair of proffessional assassins,
    a woman, a cat, lots of action, I enjoyed it thoroughly. In fact, I
    was in the mood for more, so a friend and I rented "The Specialist"
    and made it a double feature.

    Don't want to give away too much, but the story reminded me very
    generally of an old Jan-Michael Vincent/Charles Bronson film about
    two assassins: one young up-and-coming, and one guy who wants out.

    For those of you who like action flicks, or generally enjoy Stallone's
    stuff, I recommend it.

    Karen.

    	I think the Bronson movie was "The Mechanic". Great ending!!

    	And "The Specialist" was just on HBO [or SHO] last night.

    Yeah, but it's still a ripoff of the Hong Kong genre and Hollywood still
    can't do it very well. I'll see it anyway. What the hay.
956.3WELL WATCHABLE!VYGER::GRAYJPresident of the worldMon Jun 24 1996 01:045

    I thought his character was an irritating cretin and his very presence
    on screen irritated me. As for when he opened his mouth...oh dear.

    	I bet you are one of these people who goes to the pictures
    and complains about everything,from the popcorn to the on-screen
    lighting.

    No, not really (although I have a friend who does, and the popcorn at
    the local UCI is pretty bad) I just found Banderas to be a poor choice
    for this role. He was too over the top and seemed to be hamming up his
    accent for effect.

    I didn't think much of the film anyway.

    The on-screen lighting, however, was very good....:^)

    FWIW, I agree with you, I. I thought Banderas was way over acting and
    I thought the story itself left a lot to be desired.

    This movie was so bad, I actually ended up seeing it twice. After the
    first time, I just plain forgot about it and would up sitting through
    it a second time. To make it worse, it was a good fifteen minutes into
    it before I remembered suffering through it already.

956.8Oh well....I liked itPOLAR::LARABIESlinky's kinkedMon Jul 01 1996 04:3514

    Actually I just saw it again over the weekend, and to tell you the
    truth......I think I liked it better the second time around. I guess
    I wasn't paying very good attention the first time, cause I was able to
    pick up on some stuff I missed. I thought it had enough action in it
    to support the storyline, which again, I enjoyed. Then again I may just
    be biased, considering I've always liked Stallone flicks.

    Oh well, to each their own I suppose.

    Just my 0.02 worth.

    RE: .0  Karen,
           I can see the storyline comparison between "The Mechanic" and
    "Assassins" but I hope you weren't saying that "Assassins" was as good
    as "The Mechanic". Say it ain't so, Karen:)!

    RE: .3 Woody,
                 Saying Antonio was brilliant is kind of like saying the
    earth is flat:)!

     RE: .4.
     That should have said when Banderas or Stallone opened their
    mouths...oh dear!

     I hope no one was offended by the above comments but I couldn't resist.

    Now my own ideas on the movie. *HATED IT*! I love action movies but
    this was just to silly. Some of the situations in this film were so
    unbelievable, they were laughable. And the dialogue.....Oh dear! I
    still can't believe how really bad everything in this movie is.

     I can't recommend this movie for Stallone, Banderas or action fans.
    Except as an example of how to make a really bad movie. Geez, Stallone
    has been in a lot of those. I hope he isn't teaching Banderas bad
    habits.

                                  * out of ****

    As for whether it was as good as The Mechanic, probably not. But
    it's been a VERY long time since I saw The Mechanic, so who knows.
    I used to be both a Bronson fan and a Jan Michael Vincent fan, so
    that earlier movie couldn't lose at the time. I'm definately not
    a Antonio B. fan, so I was surprised that I enjoyed this movie as
    much as I did. I almost always enjoy Stallone, even if his movies
    do tend toward extreme silliness. Actually, that's exactly why I
    like him!  ;-)

    I loved this flick - thought it was one of Sly's best, for me at least.
    Didn't/don't like Banderas though, although he did make me really
    dislike him with his portrayal of this character.

    	I saw "Assassins" last night, and the climactic showdown scene
    	ended very badly. I mean, give me a break. Maybe he could've
    	ricocheted a bullet off of a light fixture instead.
