But it was about a planned mission to Mars, not the moon.
They discovered a design problem with life support on the space craft,
the crew couldn't have survived the months in space it would take to get
to Mars, so they decided to fake it.

    For some reason (irony not really intended), I seem to recall OJ

    Yup, OJ, as one of the astronauts.
    
    Not a bad cast:  Sam Waterston and James Brolin as the other
    2 astronauts, Elliot Gould as the reporter, Hal Holbrook as
    the NASA superior.  Telly Savalas was a riot as a crop pilot
    ("Put your $%$%@! head down!")...
    
    Great ending!  :^)
    
    I finally found the Laserdisc to this, but with the latest events,

    This is one of those movies that I really want to know what happens
    next.  What is "the business" like after the last scene whose
    says what to who about what and what happens to them?
    
    Its a pretty good all rounder well worth the rental.
