944.0. "The Mystery of Rampo" by TUXEDO::HASBROUCK () Mon Sep 18 1995 12:48
Saw this at the Boston Film Festival. In Japanese, with subtitles.
"The Mystery of Rampo" is a love story of sorts. Based on a famous writer
of mysteries in the 30's, the Japanese equivalent of Dashiel Hammett, the
film charts Rampo's strange encounters with his muse - a woman who
is both a figment of his imagination and a real person. In place of a
conventional narrative, the film works with fantasy technique such as animation
and dream montage to achieve a stunning emotional and sensual effect. The
film is both exquisite and disorienting. Apart from one sado-masochistic
scene that is base and tasteless, the film is most praiseworthy.
Try to see this one on the big screen - the head-trip visuals and music
score are like the best of Disney.
