935.0. "A Month by the Lake" by TROOA::BUTKOVICH (blink and I'm gone) Tue Sep 12 1995 12:09
A Month by the Lake (***)I would have given this movie another star if
it ended with the same zest and appeal that it started with - I think
it's another example of poor editing. Three of the actors introduced
the film - Vaness Redgrave had the lead role and was excellent, Uma
Thurman and Alessandro Gassman (looked *very* familar - I think he may
have been the lead in "Like Water for Chocolate"). I really want to go
on vacation to Lake Come, Italy which is where the story takes place.
It is set in the mountains and looks lush, etheral and beautiful. Miss
Bentley (Regrave) has been coming to this paradise with her father all
her life. Now he's gone and she's returned alone to take photographs
and bask in nostalgia. Soon after her arrival, she encounters Major
Wilshaw and falls madly in love. Things seem to be going her way until
the arrival of Miss Beaumont (Thurman) who is to be nanny for a
visiting Italian family. Her game is to flirt and play with the
Major's feelings. This of course, evokes great feelings of jealousy in
Miss Bentley. In the meantime, a handsome young local (Gassman) falls
for Miss Bentley. The film started off as fun and frolicky was very
engaging for the most part. It reminded me a bit of the Merchant Ivory
productions, but showing more humour.
