926.0. "To Live" by UHUH::MARISON (Scott Marison) Tue Sep 05 1995 16:39
"To Live" is a new video release by the director who made "Raise the Red
Lantern", "JoDou", "Red Sorghum", etc. (i can't remember his name)
As usual, his girlfriend (or is it wife?) Gong Li stars in this film.
I was surprised, since I didn't know about this film at all. I saw it in
the new release section of my video store, and it had a 1994 copyright
on it. So I assume it is his latest film.
It's a masterpeice. I loved "Raise the Red Lantern" - it was (yes, WAS)
my favorite film by this director. But this film surpases all the other
films he made. It's simply a joy to watch. Every scene is perfect. The
dialog, music, the way it was filmed. Everything. It's a bit of a different
film from the others mentioned above, in that while there are some sad
moments, there is much more talking in the film and not as depressing
overall.
It basically follows the story of a married couple thru 20+ years in China,
starting in the 40's and ending in the 1960's.
I don't want to say too much about the plot, as that'd just spoil things.
But if you liked the previous movies mention, you must watch this one. And
if you never watched one of these films before, watch this one first...
I give it an A+, or ***** out of *****

| Zhang Yimou. Didn't think Gong Li was girlfriend or wife. She's much
younger, not that that means anything. This film was shown at the MFA
earlier this year and also played at the Brattle.
I also read somewhere that they both went to jail briefly for doing
this film.

I heard this from my wife, who I think read it in one of her chinesse
newspapers...

that does not surprise me one bit - since the way communism is portrayed
in this film is not very flattering... In fact, I was surprised that they
were able to get away with a fairly realistic portrayal of communism, since
I think the Chinesse government help finance this film.

I am under the impression the relationship between Gong Li and Zhang
Yimou is intentionally unclear.
I wasn't aware they went to jail for the film but I vaguely recall them not
being able to leave the country to attend a festival where it was
shown.
It is definitely different than the previous films. I guess I
personally liked the earlier work better but it was a nice change and
demonstrates the breadth of Zhang Yimou's talent.
Also I heard there is another, more recent, film the two have made
together ... can't wait till it comes here.
