Written and directed by Mina Shum, starring Sandra Oh.
Oh's performance is great, really engaging. She plays a talented young
actress, whose family, Chinese immigrants to Canada, don't understand or
sympathise with the way she wants to live her life. She doesn't want to reject
them or be rejected by them. (Her older brother has already been "disowned.")
Her relationship with her family is the centre of the movie. The story
concerns her attempts to reconcile a life as a dutiful Chinese daughter, true
to inherited family values, with her need to live her own life in a different
culture.
It is a lively movie with an interesting theme, credibly handled I thought.
